Ok I admit I was wrong about the dismissal of Viera and short term return of Roy and Ray, but not at all convinced giving them another year has any real benefit for the club. It to my mind shows there is little long term planning in place and hardly screams stability. Not sure players will want to come knowing he has a year or stay if they cannot see a long term vision for the club. To my mind this screams 'sticking plaster,' or more worrying, no one else wants the job

Absolutely it's kicking the can down the road. There's no other way to look at it. It's the cheapest option. I said it on another thread but it will be interesting to see what happens. Roy was very fortunate to come into a kind run of fixtures when he took over against some poor sides and the new Manager bounce worked. We saw flashes of the old Roy though in some of our performances. Personally I worry for our club. This appointment, coupled with the new contracts for Clyne, Ward and Ferguson would suggest we are going to try and muddle through on the cheap for another season.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Why is this a new thread and not a comment on the existing moan thread?

Definition of "kicking the can down the road":- "I really am stepping away from football for a while, but who knows what the future will be? It is a never-say-never moment. I've seen so many people retire with all the fanfare blazing, only to surface again somewhere in a fairly short period of time. I'd prefer not to do that." Roy leaves after first stint only to resurface one and a half seasons later, after the fellow trumpeted to be his replacement runs into various difficulties on and off the pitch despite holding 12th position during that period. It transpires that the owners were in contact with Roy long before PV was finally removed, and it is not much of a surprise to see Roy carry on for another year, more so as I suspect no one wanted the job. Parish's reputation precedes him and the lack of funds is the ultimate decider.

Money talks in this league more than most and lets be honest and maybe look at it with some reality in tow . We are where we are , our expectations and position in the league ,at the top of the bottom half for us is champion .Thats it ,its not kicking the can down the road its holding on to a hard won position . Enjoy it for what it is ,if you can't do that you are in the wrong game .

This: & we would want to try to hang in there until the super league kicks off so we are at least involved in the divvy up of what's left after the super 7 have departed. Originally posted by Elpis

I agree . Nice one Fatherken. This exactly as I see it. This is not short termism, it's clever long term planning with Paddy lined up to take charge in 24/25. Well done Mr Parish.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

In the context of Premier League finances, Palace are comparative paupers. Let’s not forget that the new stand at last looks like it could get underway and needs funding before any financial benefit from it is realised. Re-appointing Roy actually does provide us with stability. A new manager would have had his own assessment of the playing squad , a different tactical approach and not forgetting an expectation of a meaningful transfer kitty. Roy provides the least risk in us being relegated. It’s buying time and sometimes in business, that’s what you have to do. I understand people’s frustration, but it’s done so continuing to moan about it won’t change anything.

It's only my subjective emotion and view of it all but I think in Roy's appointment it at the very least says to me that we won't be relegated (stability). I genuinely think he will do better with the current squad than his last one and whilst not the most exciting bit of news ever it is very far from precarious or potentially disastrous. One of our former managers spent around virtually a quarter of a century with Crewe and this is hardly the case with Roy. He's needed as a reflection of our situation and I'd rather sit tight and hold hope (and only that) for the future then throw all proverbial eggs into another unknown basket and see it go t!ts up.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

And also the players seem to like his approach, certainly Eze appears to, and if anything keeps them happy then I'm all for it.

There was no option, We finished the season well, Ror and Ray put the players in the right positions, everyone had a smile on there face, can you imagine appointing Potter, we lose the first 3 games and everyone says, why did we not stick with Roy and Ray
