Is patriotism a dangerous thing?

There’s no answer to that, other than “it depends”.

If you simply love your country, its culture, history and diversity whilst accepting its faults then no, it’s valuable and natural.

If it strays into xenophobic territory, which for some who proclaim themselves to be patriots it does, then yes, it’s dangerous.

can you forgive little weak countries for being Xenophobic ? when they got big powerful neighbours with Aircraft carriers.

Ukraine, Taiwan, Tibet, Finland, Ireland etc ?

to answer the OP.....Patriotism all depends on the context. Sometimes ok, sometimes bad.

Globalism is ALWAYS shyte. It turns traditional communities into a Las Vegas Brothel...Sodom & Gomorrah. As happened to Cuba before the Revolution.

Globalism has destroyed the Balearic Islands indigenous culture....and replaced it with Disneyland. Costa del puke.

And when a Pacific Island gets a shiny new Naval Base, and the local men find all the local women being targeted by Sailors ? no comment.

"Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally".

"It can be plausibly argued, for instance – it is even probably true – that patriotism is an inoculation against nationalism, that monarchy is a guard against dictatorship, and that organized religion is a guard against superstition."

[Orwell, Notes on Nationalism, 1945]

If you are currently Ukranian or Russian it most certainly is. However, if you are Scottish it's merely a financial contribution towards your Fuhrers luxurious camping holiday.

Patriotism is Gay.

Nationalism is where it is at, especially for the cool kids.

Patriotism has certainly been betrayed in the west......unless it can be temporarily used for convenient purposes as you are seeing in Ukraine....the kind of people they use to slag off as neo Nazis and bigots they now cheer on.

The left, like they have with many concepts, instinctively deem anything actually positive for their in-group to be a negative with nationalism being seen as the largest evil. For example, they have no problem with patriotism or tribal pride for what they consider foreign or 'out-groups'. This is because they inversely deem them worthy or oppressed by the west. It is through this progressive infiltration and long march take over of the institutions that their ideology has been allowed to grow until it's now essentially all you are allowed to officially see as acceptable.

For example, those of you that grew up watching the BBC remember how the national anthem was played as it closed down for the night. That ended as the BBC went from small c conservative to increasingly progressive.....sometime on from the late eighties.

Nationalism has always been in reaction to something else and its expansion and inevitable growth is a reaction to the power and expansion of the far left who somewhat amusingly sometimes see themselves as the moderates. Demographic shift isn't going to increase social cohesion and the state and its activists are only going to become more authoritarian and persecute more. Personally I think none of this is heading in a sensible direction but since when have our leaders ever given a damn about the actual people their politics affect.....it's all about the donors baby.

I'm going to concentrate on what's best for my boy's future.

I've given considerable thought to Patriotism in the past. Countries political borders and aligning oneself to one in particular , is not for me. I think the whole concept of Patriotism is fundamentally flawed.

And no, I won't be watching the Coronation

Nothing wrong in being proud of one's country. It doesn't have to mean you are some Colonel blimp or knuckle dragging racist.

The problem we have in this country is we celebrate other people's patriotism but are embarrassed to celebrate our own.

Patriotism can be used a political tool. To stoke up popular interest in an other-wise indifference to an unpopular king.

Stalin called the Russian offensive against the Nazis as a patriotic war, to sweeten the pill swallowed by millions of citizenss thrown in front of the advancing Panzer division.

Interesting replies and food for thought, i think Forest Hillbilly's views are similar to my own, i like to think of myself as a member of the human race, but i have just seen Roger Waters in Concert.

I'll be joining my local community for a street party on Sunday. Which gives everyone a chance to be neighbourly and a little patriotic at the same time.

I will doubtless watch some of the ceremony on Saturday if for no other reason than this is something we do very well and it is part of our heritage. I am a monarchist in the sense that we have stumbled over a form of government which protects us from extremism.

I cannot though warm to either Charles or Camilla. Them being King and Queen just doesn't feel right and the elevation of Camilla is a bad misjudgement. Don't get me wrong. If she was always his choice then they deserve to be together and happy, but it's too soon for another Queen. When William succeeds is the right time.
