I think that when there is a match on Shrove Tuesday, the game should be paused for players to toss a pancake.

Not new - one of the Palace games was paused for Kouyate to break his fast a couple of years ago. Both teams have to agree it with the ref beforehand I believe.

What part of it do you find ridiculous ? Or the part about following the breaking of the fast at Iftar - (when the sun goes down) or that on certain occasions the Iftar timing will fall during a competitive sporting event ? Just as an FYI: The Hadjira (Lunar) calendar is 11 days shorter that the Gregorian one (that Christians follow) so the scheduling of Ramadhan alters each year accordingly. A couple of years ago there was a break in our game against Leicester so that one of their players could break his fast and they were fulsome in their praise of us for allowing it.

Indeed, we talk about sport being more inclusive & in modern times this is one of the things that should absolutely be implemented - in reality, the time taken for a player to break his fast (usually dates & milk, with a short period to digest) is not much different to players taking a water break during a friendly - Originally posted by Midlands Eagle

Whilst I am serious on the topic of Ramadhan I thought I would share this story with you - One evening flying out of Salalah (bottom end of Oman) up to Muscat (the Capital) a flight lasting about 50 minutes, Iftar fell about 15 minutes after take off (just as the dates & milk were being served) but because of the direction & speed of the plane we were actually staying just ahead of the setting sun (so we didnt see darkness) you could imagine the confusion on the plane with about 80% of the passengers fasting all looking at each other trying to establish if it was really iftar or not - Maybe it was one of those times when you had to be there to appreciate it -

So if Christian players refused to play on Sunday then presumably all the fixtures would be rearranged, similarly for Jewish players on Saturdays. The decision for muslim players is so that there are no cries of Islamophobia. The French Federation does not allow a break for example. Edited by HKOwen (09 Apr 2023 7.41am)

I would imagine that if you were a sports proffesional who followed the belief that no work should be done on the sabbath then in todays world that would be a conversation to be had at the point of contracts, providing the employer the opportunity to either agree or disagree - but there is a big difference between saying that someone will or will not participate on every Saturday or Sunday The French federation maybe doesn't recognise allowing the possibility for a player to break his fast & I am sure there are others too - IDK why they don't, maybe its because they see it a bit like the not wearing religious or political symbols ? then its up to the club & player to come to an arrangement that they can both live with. For sure there are teams out there who, for example, have to think carefully about the number of African origin internationals in their squad because of the limitations that participating in the African cup of Nations would have on their domestic season -

TV scheduling demands (particularly of teams in the PL) have magnified the issue, back in the day when the vast majority of matches started at 3pm on a Saturday or 7.30 if it was a midweek fixture there were very few times this situation would even come up, now of course we have games starting pretty much whenever the TV companies demand it -
