This is beyond parody. And an example of exactly why the UK is so so screwed. One of my own 'rules' about trying to comprehend what is going on in British politics is to focus on who is appointed to the 'Chief of Staff' position for the senior leaders. It tells you heaps about what is going on behind the scenes. To put somebody like this in place beggars belief on a multiple of levels. And makes you question everything this woman has touched beforehand. Edited by Matov (03 Mar 2023 6.52am)

Am I missing something or what previous role did she have?

Edited by Matov (03 Mar 2023 6.52am) It does now seem obvious that for years Sue Gray pretended to be an impartial civil servant on the instructions of the left, just waiting for a moment at some point when this fake impartiality would lead to a Tory government appointing her to write a report she could use to shaft said leader of the day when on fact that leader was in fact so daft he had no idea what a party was. They should make a movie.

Of course the Cons are now saying "it was a stitch up". By the same token, are they also saying they didn't flout Covid rules and get all their party food and wine on expenses ? You could also suggest that he appointment is a very astute move by Sir Kier, in order to make sure his own party is in order, and seen to be so.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

You coukld say that but it would miss the point entirely. It calls into question the integrity of the civil service. In truth, it should be no surprise to anyone who ever left their house, that the civil service is packed with Lefties.

The problem is now that the Tories can now, with perfect legitimacy, ask serious questions about how impartial this lady has been.

When Richard Sharp was appointed to the BBC you were critical of that.

Senior civil servants are perfectly entitled to hold their own political views of whatever colour, provided that they carry out their role in support of the government with impartiality. I wonder, however, whether this lady, when attending cabinet briefings up to a few days ago, declared that she had....errr...landed a job with Sir Keith and the Labour Party! And on that job securement...which other candidates were interviewed, because surely it was a fair and open recruitment process? Which minority candidates were on the short-list? (etc etc)

(etc etc) Civil servants of whatever grade very rarely get anywhere near cabinet meetings or briefings. That is the proviso of ministers and SPADS (who are political appointees and wield a lot of influence. I can say that from experience. Sue Gray has served at a high level across all governments of all colours and was appointed by Boris as she had the reputation of being more than happy to ask questions to power whoever they were. No one in the Tory party objected to her appointment or at the time suggested her report was anything other than fair. Hindsight is a marvelous thing. She has not actually taken the job with the labour party yet. She is waiting for an independent panel to clear it. For Starmer it makes sense to bring her in. Like it or not it looks like he w stands a good chance of being the next PM and to have someone who knows the Whitehall machine can only be good for the country of he becomes PM.

Last week and at the start of this week she was party to discussions with ministers, aka members of the cabinet, about the Northern Ireland trade situation.
