Really sad the voice of football for so many years.

Time to hang up the Sheep skin coat
10 World cups
29 FA cup finals
Over 200 England Games

Sad for those of use that watched football on the TV in the 70's and 80's. Sky did marginalise him quite a bit, but he hung around.

He retired in 2018 probably the right time, if he was still working now the BBC would be replacing him with some woke candidate.

He did but he probably already knew a lot of the stats he quoted and his hours of poring over his collection of Rothmans Yearbooks just confirmed things. He didn't seem to quote his facts to impress the viewer but because he found them genuinely interesting.

Here is another Motty Fact
Motson retired from the BBC at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League season, with his final game for Match of the Day being Crystal Palace versus West Bromwich Albion in 2018.

Although I am sure he did research before each game he was due to commentate, on I always got the feeling a lot of background information was already there in his head.

Anyway, sad news, RIP Motty

He Covered our FA Cup game against Liverpool the Man Utd.

His words were fitting of the exact moment of how we we’re feeling

Never forget that voice & Dickie Davies ,Jimmy Hill & Brian Moore.

The days when commentators did not profess to be negative at the players & coach to invite sackings etc

Neville / Carragher / Keane will never ever make the grade as those 4 in a million years.

Rip MOTTY

Nor did they tell you what the players were feeling, thinking or planning to do next week!

Fifty years of proper commentating, and when there was nothing to be said - he said nothing..

David Coleman, Brian Moore, John Motson.
The Big Match. Match of the Day.
Jimmy Hill one of the first professional pundits.
Then of course the great Eddie Waring rugby league.
John Arlott cricket.
All legends in the growth of tv sport.
Wonderful memories brought by them all.
John Motson was famous for his stats but also a brilliant commentator. …and of course his sheepskin coat.
So many great moments.
RIP

the only modern equivalent i know is Jeff Stelling......seems to have Google inside his head ....his encyclopedic knowledge is worthy of Motty. Seems to always know more about Palace than half of us on here.....and then two minutes later he can give you a soap Opera of the latest squad news from Luton town.

RiP mr Sheepskin coat
