While doing my A-levels in 1977, I worked part-time in Tesco in Welling. The Lilt advert on telly had a load of Carribbean types dancing around to the tune of: Li....ilt (yes, Sir) with de totally tropical taste! A group of fellow employees in the year below me at school included a black lad called Desmond. Hence his mates within the group used to sing: Li.....ilt, with de totally DESMOND taste! Desmond went along with the wind-up and I don't recall there being any claims of racism. I wonder how that would go down today.
