I think this one slipped below the radar. Apparently we have signed this young lad from Cork City.

[Link]

Since that report there are tweets that he has signed but Like Dylan Reid no official confirmation from the club.

Perhaps they are delaying the announcement until today to give the lads some visibility?

Haven't we got enough good 18 yr olds of our own?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

He doesn't need to be very very good, he jsut needs to be better than what we have.

If he was much much worse we wouldn't have signed him.

I think people lose sight of the fact that jsut because our youth teams seam to be doing well, they are all amazing and first team players in the making. In reality, the best 18-20 year olds in the country are not playing youth football, they are playing men's football.

Franco has obviously showed that he can compete at a first team level, and is also in the Ireland national youth teams.

I don't deny you make a fair point MrR, we must assume our scouting staff have decided he's worth a punt. On a personal level I'm not convinced when I look at some of the players we've brought in.

I've now started to fantasise about a match between the Irish youth and Palace's youngsters. Not sure that's a strong point in favour of Umeh, but it would be fun to test it out.

Palace would win. I'd heard about this guy though. Can't remember what but there was certainly promise. I think West Ham were linked, possibly Liverpool.

Jude Bellingham maybe an outlier but he's 19 and has 22 caps.

Jude is quite the outlier, its ridiculous the level his is playing at for his age.

I guess the point was about not getting too carried away with the U18/21/23 performances.

If they are really good (even at 18/19) then they aren't in the youth teams, they are out playing Men's football.

These signings are throwing s*** against a wall and hoping some of it sticks. We've had one after another over the years...Scott Banks (now starring at Bradford City) was the latest Celtic messiah a couple of years ago but it goes all the way back to Rory Ginty and Brian Launders and beyond. I've nothing against this sort of deal; it makes sense and is always worth the gamble hoping eventually one of them comes good but let's be honest, it's nothing to get excited about.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

And, usually on loan to a lower division.
