When was the last time you called someone a GOAT? Or declared an "inflection point," or answered a yes-or-no question with "absolutely"?

Probably too recently, say the faculty of Lake Superior State University, the Michigan college that releases an annual list of words that they say deserve to be "banished" from our vocabularies over "misuse, overuse and uselessness."

"Our nominators insisted, and our Arts and Letters faculty judges concurred, that to decree the Banished Words List 2023 as the GOAT is tantamount to gaslighting. Does that make sense?" said Rodney S. Hanley, the university's president, in a very serious statement announcing the new list.

"Irregardless, moving forward, it is what it is: an absolutely amazing inflection point of purposeless and ineptitude that overtakes so many mouths and fingers," Hanley added.

Joining "GOAT" in banishment are nine other words and phrases that nominators and judges complained were used so often that they had become disconnected from their literal meanings – like "amazing," which nominators fretted no longer meant "dazzling" or "awe-inspiring."

"Not everything is amazing; and when you think about it, very little is," one nominator noted.

Here's the full list of the school's banished words for this year:

GOAT
Inflection point
Quiet quitting
Gaslighting
Moving forward
Amazing
Does that make sense?
Irregardless
Absolutely
It is what it is

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I find the language in American films hard to understand nowadays. Not only do they muffle the sound, but their vocabulary and speed they speak makes it tough.

There also seems to be a lot of mumbling by the actors.

We are not 'obligated' to suffer poor English.

I don't like the narrative of this thread. Where is the data , or supporting evidence ? It seems this journey is headed for a dead-end

So...We are where we are and going forward we need some blue sky outside the box thinking to establish our parameters viz a viz key performance objectives with a view to implementing on-going improvements cross functionally and across all sectors whilst getting all our ducks in a row and taking advantage of any low hanging fruit.

The word 'LEGEND' has descended from a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical although not authenticated to describing somebody who returns from the bar with crisps. I don't like that one.

It's sad, as I still feel young and am to a certain extent but even when I watch the likes of Soccer AM these days the presenters often use words where I actually convince myself I know what they mean where in reality I do not.

The word GOAT I particularly hate. There are those of us who have watched Palace in a half empty stadium on a p!ssing down, freezing Saturday afternoon playing village teams and there are people who have only ever watched a few Man United, Champions League and El Classico games on TV. Within a football context, 'GOAT' belongs to the latter.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Is it a spoken word as I've never heard anyone say it although I see it written quite a lot.

I don't know why we are worried about what words upset Americans as we gave them a perfectly serviceable language that they proceeded to mangle to bits

Good point, although I was surprised on reading one of Bill Bryson's books to learn that scores of words that we regard as American abominations are actually the exported English words, whereas we've done the mangling. Off the top of my head, a couple of examples are: 'fall' (autumn) and 'sidewalk' (pavement).
