Seaman

Ferdinand Terry Campbell

Walker.........Carrick.........Cole

Lampard Gerrard

Kane Rooney

If I had a choice of all players post 2000, I'd go for the above. To have the balance it doesn't have Scholes, but I'd say it's tough to beat.

Interesting!

Another exposure of my youth but I'm only picking from my lifetime (I've seen play) and thinking of players in their prime so I'd go:

Hart

Ashley Cole
Rio Ferdinand
Tony Adams
Kyle Walker

Gerrard
Beckham
Gascoigne

Rooney
Kane
Andy Johnson

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Good shout.

The trouble with all these types of thread is that most people have never seen most of the contenders play.

And then there's inevitable bias. 'Greatest ever Olympics moments' inevitably becomes 'Greatest ever Olympics wins by people from GB' like noone else ever won an Olympic diving gold medal before Tom Daley did.

'Scuse me, but Geoff Hurst anyone? World Cup hat trick must be worth a mention.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Right man in the right place at the right time was Hurst . You wouldnt pick Butterfield as CF in an all time Palace eleven would you

Exactly, Hurst wouldn’t even have played if Jimmy Greaves had been fit and if I had to pick one of them up front it would be Greavesey all day long, he was on a different level. The only reason he’s not in my eleven is because I was too young and I consider him before my time. He’s still one of our top scorers even though he played in a time when we didn’t play 3 or 4 crap teams in every qualifying group

And in fact Greaves had very little opportunity to play in ANY qualifying matches, as follows (NB I don't know which of these Greaves played in).

1960 European Nations Cup - England didn't enter
1962 World Cup - just 4 matches against Portugal and Luxembourg
1964 European Nations Cup - England played France over 2 legs and lost
1966 World Cup - Qualified as hosts
1968 European Nations Cup - the Home International tournament doubled up as the qualifying group, but Greaves was virtually out of the picture by then anyway
