I've touched on this before, but thought recent events have stirred a bit of antagonism in me.
Highlights and lowlights.
MPs voting themselves a largely unpublicised over-inflation pay-rise, days before Covid kicked-in.
Medical staff getting an under-inflation pay-rise of 1% as a reward after the main Covid restrictions were being lifted (and a lot of door-step clapping).
Truss, the shortest serving Prime Minister ever, gets a ring-fenced
6-figure pension, and over time will become 'Dame'.
Sir Gavin Williamson. Another abject failure as a politician and as a person. Will not having a job impact his personal wealth as much as you and me ?

And a breath of fresh air:
[Link]

"Northern Ireland politicians at Stormont are to have their salaries cut by almost one-third due to the stalemate over the establishment of an executive, BBC News NI understands.

The executive has been blocked from meeting since February due to the DUP's Northern Ireland Protocol protest." (BBC website)
At last, some politicians are facing consequences for poor performance in the workplace. How does it feel to be "all in this together" ?

anyone else ? or does you shrug your shoulders ?

I disengage, I turn the page.

I bl00dy hope not!

On topic, respective presidents of the Bar Council and Law Society are no longer touched by the butter knife after they leave office. I should hope so, they are only 12-month terms. That said, they both leave their lucrative posts for less paid public service that, theoretically at least, advances the community of legal service users (a £multi-billion industry).

The change does reflect a change of honours pass-out. These days, it is he or she who has garnered popular press coverage; and those rewarded for party loyalty. Not exactly a reward for selfless public duty is it.

Then again, was it ever so? 7% of the population are privately educated. 50 years ago, I suspect there was hardly a person knighted who did not come from that small, privileged, demographic cabal.

The Lord's should be called the RFF.
Starmer making the odious Tom Watson a Lord.
Boris putting forward two "advisors" aged 27 & 30 years old.
Both left office early!
Nuts!

Public sector workers get the sack for whatever reason but walk away with huge pay offs and their paid for by the rest of us pension.
The examples of RFF make a very long list!

Football managers are difficult to beat in terms of reward for failure. If they don't meet expectations, which are often set unrealistically high, they are sacked with a huge payoff.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

In many places farmers are paid to leave a field empty....to grow nothing at all. The so called Common agriculture policy.

Or alternatively they were paid to produce shyte that nobody wants to buy. The "wine lake"

Rewarded for failure.

For a time I worked for quite a large industrial machine company, they employed about 12000 people, I couldn't believe the number of times a middle or senior manager screwed up (largely because they were incompetent & should never have been in that position in the first place) & several weeks later there would be an announcement on the company website that they were being promoted into even higher positions that they knew even less about -

It seemed to be a regular magic roundabout to get these guys higher up the tree so they were less involved in the day to day business -

Whilst this was going on, good guys that knew their stuff were being thrown to the wolves (fired) because they were concentrating on doing their job & not playing the political game - It was certainly a bizarre period -

The Knighting and Lording, whilst of limited monetary value, does rather elevate your social status, or that certainly was the case.
Now I think it's rather like Degree's. Because everyone can have one, it rather devalues it.

I concur, the Lords needs disbanding and we need a new upper chamber to review legislation.

There are doubtless some competent and sensible people there but the institution is devalued by the political appointments. Plenty of examples from all parties.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Reform of the HOL is not difficult they just don't want to do it.

Most democratic countries have 2 chambers a lower house based on population and an upper house based on geography so that the sparser populated areas are not ignored.

My HOL would be 2 senators per region elected by some form of proportional representation. This wont happen because it takes away the patronage of the politicians and the various religions.

The excuse to promote a failed MP is always they bring valuable experience to the upper house, I think most of us think hang on this guy got sacked by the electorate and yet he still hangs on.

Hitler used to give the same job title to multiple people....let them fight it out. Thus the Furher kept his own position unassailable.

I saw an equivalent at an education institution in South London. A senior manager had a team of utter numpties who could barely tie their own shoelaces. He would always defend them for their regular failings. The one thing he would not abide ? Competence or talent. Looking good at the job ? Managed to get a large number of people the bullet.

Eventually there was a mutiny against him from all the other middle managers.....as he was pushing hard to climb the greasy pole.

But it is evidence that office politics matters. The Hitler & stalins promote loyalty in the senior ranks, not competence.

A Labour insider (chat show celebrity )gets promoted to the shadow cabinet in spite of multiple gaffs & David Starkey gets cancelled.
