So there are still a few players available on a free transfer. And we can still sign players on a free after the window shut. Here is a few names that stand out. Just wondering what you guys thing about any of these.
Personally I would like Zagadou or Denayer as back up for Guehi and Andersen, Juan Mata even though his age is against our policy could do a job for a season and Costa solely due to the fact he is a proven goal scorer and that is what we need. Is there any other free agents I have missed that could be suggested? Thoughts?

Dan-Axel Zagadou CB
Ross Barkley CM
Juan Mata CM
Diego Costa CF
Djibril Sidibe RB
Matej Vydra CF
Jason Denayer CB
Santiago Arias RB

Not really mate. We have Tomkins who is the new Connor Wickham and always injured, we have Richards who isn't ready and Ward who is a right back being used as a center back. I'm not even mentioning Furguson as I don't think he will ever come good and that we should cut our losses with him.

we only have 13 games to play, backups not needed

And if we do have mounting injury problems we could always do a Newcastle and pretend that we can't put a team out as they have all caught covid and defer our games until after we have bought re-inforcements in the January window

I'll go out on a limb and say a reduced wage offer and short term contract for Ross Barkley might not be the worst idea in the world!

I was under the impression that clubs are not clambering to sign him up, he's not 'over the hill' in terms of age, had a very unsuccessful and I'd imagine torrid time at Chelsea and there was certainly a player there at some point.

Been in London for a while, might be a genuine chance for game time if he wants it and in lieu of no Gallagher or any other midfielder coming in... could be a winner. I did say 'could be'! Not saying we 'should definitely' etc.

Not unusual to see a list of free agents pop up on this site, telling of our transfer (in)activity over the years!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

There is a reason why a team short on midfielders releases a midfielder.

He is incapable of following instructions and a waste of space.

I suggest it depends on the club.
Barkley was on high wages apparently. Also:
1) RLC hadn't been injured when Barkley was released
2) Gilmour is presumably not good enough for Chelsea
3) Apparently, we got as far as arranging a medical for Gallagher before Chelsea pulled the plug because they hadn't got the new CM they wanted and RLC's injury left them shorter of CMs than they felt comfortable with.

In short Chelsea's standards, like those of several other top clubs, are higher than those of a modest club like Palace.

The big questions re Barkley are:
a) his fitness/injury record and
b) the wages he would expect.

As Nicholas said, Barkley's not over the hill age wise and there is a player in there somewhere (he showed that early doors at Villa last season before his injury).

I'd consider him on a small weekly wage with bonusses per game for being fit enough to play and ikn the match squad.

I trust PV he knows more about midfielders than any one us. If he could get a tune out of Barkley great but maybe he's just not worth the trouble and might even upset the dressing room.

Anyway RB is not match fit and with only 13 games to the next window how many would he actually play for us?

If Mata is available grab him immediately. Just what we need.
