For it to be prosecuted as a death threat, it requires 'A person who without lawful excuse makes to another a threat, intending that that other would fear it would be carried out' which is pretty tough to prove as an anonymous person online who has most likely never been anywhere near Joachim Andersen.

It's more likely to be malicious communications, [Link] which is deemed to be low level from a sentencing perspective.

Police would need to go via instagram to get the details of all 300-400 people, many of whom won't be in the UK, then prove that it was the account holder who sent the message for an offence that has a maximum sentence of 12 months and is more likely to be a fine.

The police simply don't have the resources to do that, nor do the courts to charge it given the current backlog. The worst one or two may get action. Ultimately the platforms should be doing a lot of the leg work in closing these accounts and prevented these people from making new accounts.

Investigate and prosecute are two entirely different things. A handful of those offenders have been through the court system and they've got very light action taken against them.

There's no such thing as class action in a criminal case, so every individual interaction needs everything joined up to prosecute. Multiply that by 400, even once you've identified who sent it, and it's an extraordinary amount of work for what is, unfortunately, a relatively low level offence. It's got sod all to do with which club they play for and everything to do with the proportionality of going after every single one of these versus other crimes.

Don't expect to see 400 people go to jail here. If the 10 worst ones get made an example of by going through the system and it lands the message publicly, that's a realistically very good outcome.
