So several universities have either removed from their reading lists, or attached "trigger warnings" to, books which might upset students because of content such as rape, slavery and violence. Authors to beware of include Agatha Christie, Shakespeare, Chaucer (yes, he's a bit saucy in parts), Jane Austen (goodness save us from her prim heroines) and Dickens (occasionally tear-jerking). But perhaps we should show a little understanding of the universities' pathetic behaviour. I mean, who's not to say that some middle-aged university graduate will not one day complain about depression, sue his university for not protecting him from upsetting influences twenty years ago, and walk away with a substantial out-of-court settlement? After all, that's what happens in the country we now live in.

Whatever happened to universities being a place of learning where students challenged themselves exploring different ideas and values even if they were unpalatable. These people will not survive in the real world of employment e.g. Boss: I need this in 1 hour Worker "okay but I was always allowed an extra 15 minutes at school and uni because...." Boss "why not take the rest of your life off." Worker meltdown "It's not fair..." Edited by Badger11 (10 Aug 2022 3.23pm)

Will it also include Douglas Reeman, CS Forrester, Ian Fleming(after all Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has everthing in it) & to bring it up to date, JK Rowling?
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Isn't it all just plain ridiculous? Never went to Uni myself, but, like Badger writes, I always understood they were intended to develop our bright, young folk by challenging ideas and discussing all manner of issues. Some of the books with content warnings for the delicate little things include The Classic Fairy Tales because they describe cruelty to animals, Far From The Madding Crowd with it's upsetting scenes concerning the cruelty of nature and even The Bible which describes shocking sexual violence. As I've written on here many times before - the world's gone mad.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I've often wondered how we managed to cope in the good old days where we didn't have trigger warnings, be they on the telly, before a movie, universities, etc. Now, we have to be mindful of a bunch of pathetic bed wetting t***ter obsessed snowflakes who take personal offence, or take offence on behalf of others, at the smallest thing. I'm waiting for an announcer warning Eastenders viewers that "this programme contains people laughing and smiling which may offend miserable b******s on some social media platforms".

I guess the Channel 4 Red Triangle films in the 80s were a form of trigger warning. Didn't trigger much except the realisation I'd just wasted two hours waiting for something juicy to happen.

The most amazing thing about people who get in a frenzy about 'wokies' is that they spend most of their time citing things that they "expect will happen soon" as proof of the woke culture they despise so much, despite there being absolutely 0 indication of those things actually happening.

Or it was a joke which has proved it's point.

Obviously someone who can't recognise sarcasm. Maybe I should have warned, "the next sentence contains sarcasm"

What point did it prove? Replace the word "programme" with "post".
