Can someone explain to me why the UK hasn't built 2 or 3 desalination plants for water usage, the money that has been wasted on things like The high speed rail link, in Lanzarote there is no water problems as the reservoir is the Atlantic which is continuing to rise, and my current water bill is about 20 euros a month

It's a very good point Lanzo. We are, after all, surrounded by water and you'd think our boffins could make it work. Oh well, I'd better do my bit and skip taking a shower again today.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

If the water companies invested in repairing the existing reservoirs it would go a long way to solving our water shortages by stopping 25% of the water leaking away

London does have a desalination plant for use in this kind of scenario........... But it's not operational due to maintenance and costs.

The power demand is huge and not cost effective in most locations. The resultant water is poor quality. Better to build extra storage and a better grid. It is still way too leaky. Note that the Thames plant is for brackish not salt water. Edited by Mapletree (08 Aug 2022 9.15am)

It's high in minerals and can be pretty heavy in chlorine. It's normally safe to drink, but doesn't taste great. We all use it to cook with and brush our teeth, but almost everyone here uses bottled water for drinking.

Perhaps the 10 million extra people added to the population might be a reason why water is rationed every other year. Just a glimpse into our future. Water companies would charge their customers higher prices if they start major work on improving the situation. Does anyone believe they will?
