Seen some posts inferring Johnstone should replace Guaita. Can somebody explain why? Can someone paste some stats? I like Guaita and I don't see anyone replacing him! Am I missing something?
Your thoughts please.

Obviously age is a factor, plus Guaita is often linked with going back to Spain. I would think VG the better player currently but we won't know unless we give the new guy a try.

Agree

VG is our no 1. He's been consistently good for seasons now.

Johnstone may have a decent pedigree, but he is 29 and played 1 season in the prem. To suggest he walks straight in as no1 is pretty insulting to VG.

That's what I thought.

Johnstone was Darren Moore's first signing at WBA.
I recall hearing some while ago, possibly 2 years ago, that Johnstone split opinions amongst supporters at the club and still had to win some of them over.

My Baggy mate describes him in a way that makes him sound a bit like Hennessey. I'm not totally convinced that he's better than Butland let alone VG

Why did we buy him?

If he is no better than VG?

I’m sure he would’ve left West Brom to play games to get into the WC squad, as he was in the squad at the Euros.

If he is not going to be no1 pretty soon I don’t get the move as I’m sure for most players it’s about minutes on the pitch before November!

Get fit first. Show what you have in the Carabao Cup. At some stage this season Vinny will drop out with some injury or other, then show what you can do. Then is the time to have the debate, not now. Move Butland and Matthews on, Joe Whitlock looks more than capable as a back-up.

I suspect Johnstone was bought to backup Guaita rather than replace him.

Guaita is a proven lower prem keeper. Johnstone is not. Guaita is the incumbent but he's a reflex keeper who's getting older.

Therefore Johnstone has an opportunity, but no more, to try to displace him. But from what I've read, Johnstone won't be the answer unless he's been badly coached and is willing to work very hard to correct his flaws.

I think the thing is is that Johnstone is an upgrade over Butland and that's a good thing if Guaita gets injured. I think he's still our first choice but nice to have a younger guy in the wings if we need him.

My feeling is that this is more an indication of what PV thinks about Jack Butland and Remi Matthews.

I imagine he was brought in as 2nd goalkeeper in case Guaita gets injured (which is not an unusual occurence - not long term injuries, but they do happen).

It's a shame for Jack Butland, as I think he did well for us at the back end of the last season.
