So the GMB apparently want a maximum temperature to work in; that being 25*c. Are these clowns for real. I would hazard a guess that 50% of their members bugger off in the summer to cook in a hot country. How much more woke are we going to get. It’s a hotter than normal summer. Suck it up you already get to walk out if it’s below 16*c.

Late post for the member for Medway- are you still getting up at 4,30 am for your CONservative 4 jobs paper round to make ends meet? Have you ever considered the reason you are on x amount of pounds per hour is because of unions in the past? Imagine if someone died, working in 40 degree heat, because they had to pay their mortgage, and feed their kids, perhaps on a building site, a nurse on the way to work, or even an unwashed, thick, lefty, climate change protester, imagine if they were, errrr, actually right! I know they are making it up,just leftys, don"t wash, obviously don"t work as on benefits- and loving it, but just take a minute out of your busy, CONservative working schedule, to pay bills, and imagine!

Just to share a similar slant on this - Whilst working in the Middle East there was some unrest among Filipino maids (of which there were plenty) they felt they were being taken advantage of (which to some extent they were) the Filipino embassy issued a charter of employment for maid employment, things like, a set minimum wage (which was considerably higher than the average maid pay at the time) one day off per week, annual flights home with 30 days leave in home country, etc etc. On the face of it a good move to protect their countrymen & women from exploitation, however the local employment market didn't see it the same way & soon after Filipino maids were complaining that their employment contracts weren't being renewed, they were being sent home & replaced by other nationalities who didn't insist on this employment charter. So whilst some employment protection is definitely a good thing its also worth remembering that services provided have a price as well as a value.

The latest crusade from the UNITE union is that if an employer makes a profit, then it can afford to pay its workers more. Also that profit is a hidden factor in high inflation that "nobody mentions". Good to see a union grasping economic reality.

Lots of things these days can either be done by technology (level of investment outweighing the cost of employment) goods produced in another country where the cost of labour is lower or services provided in this country by lower paid / less demanding workers (ok since Brexit & a lot of the East Europeans going home that's more problematic just at the moment but that will only be a relatively short term blip before its overcome) The train drivers & signal workers by striking are only driving nails into their own coffin, technology can replace them, striking

Well tbh I have been there with 430 up and home at 7pm 7 days a week as a welder in the height of summer. Get that CP I know what it’s like. It’s not a new phenomenon to actually work in uncomfortable conditions. Yes the unions have done stuff for everyone in employment; even MPs I would imagine so are you saying we should all roll over and take it from them whenever they say things. Bow down to them like they are some god like being. You do clearly and when your mob get back into power the super unions will emerge again and we will be totally fecked, even you. Unless you work for the state which ironically doesn’t make any profit for the economy, not that the jobs arnt needed or worthwhile but facts is facts.

It's basic economic theory. There are four 'factors of production' and despite what the unions might think, 'labour' is just one of those four. If the cost of labour increases, then the economic model will adjust as far as it can to compensate. That is, in your example, the role of capital (i.e. AI) will increase and the role of labour will decrease. Simples!

That's another aspect of how daft the UNITE theory of profit is. They are basically agreeing that public sector pay doesn't deserve to be higher because the employers don't make a profit. But judging from the demeanor of trade union leaders, they are either too thick or too bigoted to grasp such a complicated irony. And, of course, the friendly BBC interview is too polite (or too thick) to point it out to them.

Their stance of 25 degrees centigrade is a first pitch negotiating bid.Remember GMB workers do physically demanding jobs and the heat affects you more.I'm (unlike you) not medically qualified to state a safe/dangerous temperature in which you can soldier on. I will leave it to the medical experts to advise on this but feel a maximum temperature for work outside should be established. My son is office based and it is already agreed that he will not go to work over the next two days,he just touches buttons!

As am I but have to say I think that a commute with the world and it's dog and spending the day in a predominantly glass, insufficiently air-conditioned building to do something I can quite proficiently do from home seems entirely, unnecessarily, perilous in what is forecasted to be extreme heat. Speaking of which, it says 23*c on my laptop and feels relatively cool. I'm guessing it may be a bit early in the day to start with my usual sarcasm over such things as weather forecasts however!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |
