When he was a child, my late father and his brothers would go up to the parade at weekends and hire themselves out to families with a relative in a bath chair. For thruppence they pushed the chair up and down the parade, whilst the family 'took the air' for their health and were free to talk to the invalid as well, without tiring themselves out.

It help keep his family fed............

It’s saw that quite a long while ago and it’s probably older than all of hol’s members.

I read the thread title and thought you can’t mean south Norwood, although the new small bars and cafes that have sprung up beat a chicken shop and bones everywhere like West Croydon.

Just saw this too..

"Crystal Palace was named in the Sunday Times newspaper's top ten list of "the best places to live in London" of 2016. In April 2022 Crystal Palace was named the best place to live in London by the Sunday Times."

I was watching a random property programme not so long ago and people were being offered lovely looking properties to view in Sydenham, Penge and Dulwich, but they weren’t interested unless it was in Crystal Palace, despite the quality and better value for money of the properties just down the road.

Having lived in Palace for half my life, my response is this...

''jesus, what were the other places like ?''

it is / was, the most burgled part of south London also.
Before i moved out of Cronx, I contracted to a property management co. that had me paint the exteriors of many huge converted properties in Crystal Palace.
The police often called & asked if we'd seen heard anything on x day & one time they had taken a flat over for surveilance (told us to ignore them & get on with the job)

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

Best people for casing a joint are the postman and dustman. Particularly postman, because they deliver everyday and can notice more readily when people are away.
