So we're linked with Sam Johnstone (29) and I think there was some passing reference to Pope, although in my view Johnstone on a free is much more our style.

We are also not aware of what is going on behind the scenes. Jack may want guaranteed first team football. I’m sure he does not want to be number 2 GK for another season.

The one obvious issue with both Vicente and Butland is that neither are good with the ball at their feet, which is more of an issue now we're starting to play out from the back. I don't think that is one of Pope's strong points either. To be honest I can remember whether Johnstone was good with his feet, but he was POTY for WBA when they were in the PL (apparently hasn't had a great season this year though)

Always seem to Want 3! Whenever I've seen Sam Johnstone(which admittedly isn't much) he looks a class act. that one Cameo for England really stood out for me. happy to have any player of that class at our club.

The obvious question for me is WHY are we being linked with Johnstone given that we already have two decent, albeit not top class, keepers? What do the click-baiters think they know that we don't?

We know VG want to return to Spain but i'm pretty sure he'll do so after next season as a free agent - he will be 36 then so no issues if he does that. He's on big money now so doubtful a club will pay similar wages and a transfer fee. Butland is ok but is a similar type of keeper - his inability to command his area is a big negative IMHO. He is glued to his line at corners. He probably wants first team footie but unless a bottom 6 prem team come in for him not sure if that will happen. Johnstone looks ok but will not want to come to warm the bench. Is he better than VG??

I seem to be in a small minority but I've really not been at all impressed by Butland this season. He seems to be a good character/part of the squad but in my view, his goalkeeping skills have been short of what's required. If Johnstone, Pope or anyone else comes in as our number 2, I'd see it as an ugrade.

BBC saying it's likely Butland will leave if Johnstone comes in. Butland seems almost identical to Hennessey in my mind: big kick on him, big presence, but a bit slow. I like him, but if he went I don't think he'd be a big loss and he has looked genuinely terrifying with the ball at his feet a few times this season. Johnstone would then have a season to prove he's ready to succeed Vicente when (it seems) he will return to Spain.

I do not and will not begrudge Vinnie a move back to Spain, he's been a great player for us and on a human level it's understandable. Agree on Butland, which is a shame as he really looked like the real deal at one stage, albeit years ago. I'd like to see if not the man, the likes of Johnstone come in with a bit more forward planning on another keeper. I do think we should have three, which for me are a first choice, a capable deputy and god-willing a youthful and ambitious goalkeeper, great if home grown.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Ideally you want genuine competition for places and I don't think Butland has shown enough to take VG's. He's also at a stage in his career where he needs to get regular first team football.
