The annoyance of the Everton result is partially offset by the pant pissingly funny meltdown of the Left who had all confidently predicted more fines for Johnson.

Looks like he will survive this scandal. And whilst the meltdown of the left is always amusing, none of it alters the reality that Johnson is as odious as his worst critics claim he is. A truly loathsome man with no honour.

But he seems to have the special sauce that means he survives what would destroy other politicians, not just the once but over and over again.

I used to work with a guy like that- no matter what he did, what lies he told , however much he screwed up nothing would stick to him, it used to infuriate the flipping life out of me - he did get fired in the end but it took years to get rid of him.

As you say he just had that "special sauce", everything was someone else's fault & he didn't care who he threw under the bus.

It is definitely a thing. I am sure there is a clever foreign word to describe what is essentially a kind of charisma but just a s***tier kind than you usually associate with that particular word.

Power, and more importantly, the desire for it can take some odd forms and often the most successful people in obtaining it (and politics is the only real 'power' game in town when all is said and done) are the ones who seemingly refuse to abide by what people assume are the rules.

It is a subject that fascinates me, I must confess but Johnson is a man I am growing to loathe more and more now.

The right-leaning press are leading with this story, like it is something to be proud of. The Sue Grey report is about to be published and thought to contain damning evidence of the culture amongst Ministers and Civil Servants, all under his watch, and said to be encouraged by him.
Still, better go with that than the pl55-poor pay rise given to NHS workers, embezzlement of Covid contracts, spiralling inflation, etc etc.

I agree with you. No victory for anyone. If the opposition weren't so utterly sh1t, then this would be election losing stuff. There's literally no one to vote for in the UK. The only clear policy is Ukraine. Everything else is not working, not implemented or just pure bluster.

Labour need to put someone with character into the leadership (Rayner) and match bluster with fluster if they want to win - which it doesn't look they do currently.

One thing with politics is though - it can change pretty quickly. Take away Boris and Starmer and there are some more steadfast party stalwarts around. I'm expecting two leadership contests.
Or the Monster raving looney party could be in with a shout.

Are there other potential leaders waiting in the wings though? I follow this stuff closer than most and I cannot see any obvious candidates on either side.

Out of the Tories, I perhaps rate Gove the most but I suspect he is not PM material. But out of the other supposed front runners, then none strike me as election winners.

In terms of Labour, much the same really. Perhaps Nandy, at a push given her stance on Brexit in the run up to December 2019 which shows she has at least a semblance of intelligence but other than her? At least Labour have potential outsiders they can try and get into place (and I still think David Milliband will be the next Labour PM) but for the Tories? Its a poor show around at the moment.

It defies all logic that the PM was not issued with fines for each of the illegal parties that he attended.

He really is a Houdini, nobody else could get away with it, it is suspicious and it further erodes the publics confidence in the police, who have also acted politically and not operationally during 'partygate'.

Of the six illegal events Johnson is attended, he must have been deemed to have attended five of them legally.

The war in Ukraine has been Johnsons's survival ticket. It has changed the focus, just as the Falklands did for Thatcher.

Events do that in politics. They eventually fade and the focus resumes.

I wholeheartedly agree, all round not just highlighted.

I reckon if you asked the average bloke on the street even something as simplistic as "Which of these names better represents you: Boris or Kier" you'd be vulnerable to a jab in the mouth.

It's a choice between toff schoolboys who masquerade as conservatives or toff/well-off Labour representatives who masquerade as representing the working people of the UK. Neither have political doctrines, traditions or ideologies they are committed to IMHO and both have now become something akin to what's over the pond, appealing for the popular vote and trying to destroy the opposition, or even worse.

For me, out of the leading two, it's vote for incompetent, out of touch Tories who are all only self-interested (and I mean themselves not the party), or for Labour, who at best look like a poundshop parody of their former selves, clutching desperately at straws.

I pretty much agree with all the replies posted. I was watching an episode of "Yes, Prime Minister" yesterday, in one of the fantastically written farces. And I thought,....if you saw what was happening in Westminster at the moment, then it makes 'Yes, Prime Minister' look almost like a sensible documentary.

Your post is supposition only until the report is issued
