Not sure where you're planning on going, Elche Airport(Alicante) will be a nightmare for Brits going to Benni, they only have 1 Border Control each for pax & family's to get through, they tell you to be at the airport 2hrs before departure, you might want to be there 3hrs before. GTW was fine, though it depends what time your flight arrives.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

It might be a bit outdated, but for information: I flew back from Gatwick South Terminal to Vienna exactly a fortnight ago. I got an email from Wizz telling me to be there early as they were expecting longer queues: The result: showed up at airport 3 hours before departure, 1 passenger in front of me at the Wizz counter, nobody in front of me at the electronic passport control, 2 passengers in front of me at the security check, arrived at the gates 2:40h before departure! I then decided to celebrate this at Weatherspoons, where I encountered the longest queue of the afternoon, but after 5-6 customers and a wait of about 5 minutes, I had my beer.

End of April Heathrow T5 was a nightmare 2 hours to drop my bag off and get through security. I am going to T2 on Thursday so I am hoping that things have improved. Airport delays are such a regular occurrence that the media has stopped reporting them except when they are really bad. All I can suggest is check in online and get their early. Gatwick are having problems recruiting Security staff, post pandemic. They decided to lay people off rather than furlough them. Consequences are, staff do not want to return given the appalling shift patterns, pay etc. Edited by Spiderman (10 May 2022 10.08pm)

A very useful thread, thank you. Would be useful to also see what times people arrived at airports. Edited by HKOwen (10 May 2022 10.57pm)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Gatwick North 3 weeks ago - Booked long stay car park kept getting messages that dont turn up at the car park unless pre - booked because of high volumes - I booked the premium security service (£5) because of all the media coverage about long queues, arrived at the airport car park about 05.30 hours & was in the queue for wetherspoons by 06.10 hours - so I was glad I did & the airport terminal building was packed. Couple days ago - my boss was in Birmingham seeing customers, he had the evening flight back to Belfast, he allowed 2 hours from arrival at the terminal building (which was normally plenty of time) due to delays checking in & in security he ended up missing the flight.

Not only are airports etc struggling to recruit staff but due to so many public servants wfh it is proving difficult for people to get security access etc when they are ready to work - so I heard anyway.

Many airlines are not doing it or are doing like BA a packet of crisps (I kid you not) and you can't even buy a sandwich. I was lucky after the 2 hours to get through the airport I just had enough time to get breakfast, most of the people on the flight didn't and were upset they were unable to buy any food on the plane. So get their early, expect the worse be patient and have a meal before you board. Edited by Badger11 (11 May 2022 7.37am)

This flying malarky, to get away for a break,....sounds very much a nightmare. Plus Covid restrictions/infection rates at destinations are likely to be similar to UK.
I disengage, I turn the page. |
