Sorry FH, but a better 'chant' story in the news. Spurs, the club not team or fans, have come out to condemn their supporters singing the well know and loved chant 'Sign on...sign on...with a pen, in your hand' chant to the scousers. They've released the following statement: "Poverty and joblessness are not fair game for banter" Now, it may just be me, but I thought this chant was aimed at the general scumbaggery of scousers, not a comment of those disaffected by a turbulent economic climate, and therefore am inclined to believe that the corporate face of football very much needs to f**k off and stop embarrassing itself. I may be wrong however if anyone cares to explain?
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

UEFA cup, surely? That’s right, they were letting two teams back into Europe, back in the day when only the champions got into the European Cup, and on this occasion the 2nd place team into the UEFA Cup, which was Liverpool, but as they were still banned it should’ve been us, but as we all know, surprise, surprise, Liverpool‘s ban was lifted

Teasing of opposing fans is part of being in a football stadium. To my mind poverty is not applicable as everyone will have paid to attend. However the stadium atmosphere should not leak into the surrounding area,

I generally take the view that if you cant take a joke / have a laugh at yourself you shouldn't be there.

Scouse humour is typically sarcastic and is only one way, give it back and they get a serious cob on. On the brightside the quadruple appears to be dead and buried.

you are correct, YT. Yes I realised what you meant, although you have got your years out by a bit! In 83/84, there were 4 English teams in the UEFA Cup. This was 1 as of right, plus 3 more based on a coefficient taking into account the performance of English clubs in European competitions over 5 years. In 84/85, there were 5 English teams - 4 as above plus 1 more because Spurs won it in 1984 (I was at WHL for the 2nd leg of the final, but that's another story!). Then in May 1985 Liverpool thugs killed 39 people and injured 600 more. English clubs were banned for 5 years therefore the coefficient fell away, so when clubs were reinstated, there was only 1 UEFA cup place for an English team, taken by Villa in 1990/91. And 1 place again in 1991/92. Had English clubs stayed in European Competition and made even modest progress for the missing 5 years, there would easily have been enough UEFA cup places in 1991/92 to reward our 3rd place finish in 1990/91. Monkey is right to recall the bitterness of Liverpool suddenly being let off the final year of their extra 2 year ban, which stopped us from getting the 1 UEFA cup place that was then available.

It's worse than that. The Scousers started the season banned from Europe then midway through the season UEFA reinstated them. In other words the rules of the competition were changed after it had started, that is my bitterness. Edited by Badger11 (10 May 2022 8.16am)
