Watching on as an interested observer, having decided, for only the second time in my life, to choose NOT to vote. My reasoning is simple. I live in Croydon. It matters not a single jot who I cast my vote for given it is a failed state now, effectively run by Whitehall and will be that way for years and years to come. Simply not worth the effort of taking part in the farce with the ludicrous Mayoralty race merely the cherry on a s***ty, toxic cake.

As to the wider battle then I suspect/hope the Tories get a good kicking but have seen some interesting polling claims which point towards, outside of London, Labour maybe losing seats. Posing the ever salient question that Labour have to face in this modern electoral age about their ability to ever form a majority Government again in the UK.

But we will see. It should be Starmer's day and hopefully that useless oaf Johnson gets the shelacking he so, so deserves. But ultimately a curse on all their houses. None of them represents me.

If I am to ever run independently Matov, I am using this as my campaign slogan.

Asides from blasting out The Dave Clark 5 upon my glorious victory, my plans have not yet extended beyond this however.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I expect Labour to make gains, after all this is a mid term election and most governments lose seats.

The question is how big a margin will there victory be? The Tories have had to deal with the pandemic and now Ukraine with mixed results along the way they have made some appalling blunders and lost the usual number of MPs through sleaze.

If Labour fails to score a resounding victory then Starmer is in big trouble. If he can't beat "Boris the Liar" (Croydon Proud) and his shambolic government he will lose the next election.

So look for the size of the victory and compare it to Blair's.

Its the breakdown of the vote as well. This is the primary issue for Labour. If it is ever to form a Government again on its own merits then it needs to win big in England and Wales. London is largely a given for it these days. And they have known this since 2015 (if you are truly sad like I am, then it is all spelt out in the Fabian society analysis of the 2015 GE, which is the accepted Labour orientated view of such things).

And why their second referendum policy after 2017 was lunacy on a scale that is difficult to imagine. Political suicide, and driven by Starmer.

Labour is a truly strange organisation.

If you are not going to vote you should at least spoil your ballot or give your vote to an independent

Despite my misgiving I voted Tory for one simple reason. Bromley Council is a fairly well run organisation.

1. It has a balanced budget and no debt many councils Labour and Tory cannot say that.

2. It picks up our garbage each week and has one of the best recycling rates.

3. Most of the metrics that politicians use to complain about how badly a council are run are in the ok or good category e.g. schools.

4. It doesn't waste time or money of vanity projects such as pulling statues down or renaming roads or debating Trans issues.

It's not perfect and no doubt the opposition will complain that they don't spend enough money on this area or that however where will the money come? Like I said Bromley has no debt.

In fact Bromley council is the first to complain about lack of funding from central government pointing out that they are penalised whilst inefficient Labour boroughs are rewarded.

Okay a political argument but unless someone is prepared to give Bromley more money they spend what they have.

I have read the opposition leaflets which are mainly about Boris and Tory government sleaze bashing but very little on how they will run Bromley council better. There are pledges to spend more money that they actually don't have.

So in short "If it aint broker why fix it".

Anyone who votes today should be voting for the best in their local area.
Those who choose the wrong Councillor just to give the Government a bloody nose are ultimately not supporting the right party locally - whatever their politics.
My area is now a Lib Dem Council - utterly useless in every way and they have set out to ruin the Borough - hopefully it will be a Tory gain tomorrow - not for Boris but for our local Towns.

For the first time I see local politics as best being Tory and nationwide anything but Tory.

I’d vote for you Nicholas by the way, you might as well give it a go.

Normally I would be in full agreement but Croydon is such a basket case that it makes zero difference to anything.

Not bothering to vote either this time. You earn a vote, it isn't just given.

As at 5 am UK time looks like:

Conservative losses not as bad as projected

Labour gains in terms of seats put Starmer in a difficult place, winning Wandsworth ( which is pretty champagne socialist ) but losing Hull.

Labour just held on to Sunderland

Not much change in Northern ex Red Wall, Labour lost 5 seats in Oldham for example.

LibDems usually do well in local elections which is ok as they can't influence national policy.

Scotland looks likely continue to be a major problem for Labour ever getting a general election majority.

So all in all, Conservatives getting punished for recent behaviour lapses and probably deservedly so

BBC , Sky and the other pro Labour media gloating on Wandsworth and hardly mentioning Hull as expected.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.
