Quite a while before the game, I spotted from my seat in Block 125 a whole pile of balloons at the front of the lower tier behind the goal.

I then saw some stewards bursting them.

Does anyone know what was all that about?

Saw that. The steward watched the chap blow them up and then proceeded to burst them. Others then went around the seats bursting any they could find. Posters on bbs saying they were being confiscated outside due to health and safety. One chap also got a fine for having them.
Just another s*** rule to take fun out of game.

Thank you.

I did wonder at the time if the curse of health and safety had crawled out from under its cheerless, sanitised and cotton wool wrapped hole.

I'm not sure how balloons could be a danger to public health but it seems one little jobsworth thought it might.

Tis strange they only burst the balloons in that particular area. On our disabled platform in Block 125, my granddaughter and I blew up about 20 balloons, and the chap next to me and his family blew up a fair up as well. Yet, the stewards around us didn't mind at all. Judging by the awesome number of balloons flying around when the players emerged from the tunnel, I'm thinking the vast majority of the other stewards didn't haven't a problem either.

I am guessing that pile of balloons at the front of the lower tier must have caused a particular danger to...erm...ah...someone

Just googled Crystal Palace balloons and from the Telegraph:

Balloons can spread panic, say council killjoys as they deflate the football fun.

’Heavy-handed’ officials fine family who were handing out inflatables to Crystal Palace supporters at FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium

From the Times:

Crystal Palace fans deflated after thousands of balloons seized outside Wembley.

A Crystal Palace supporter had 29,000 balloons confiscated and was issued with a fixed penalty notice worth £100 before their FA Cup semi-final defeat against Chelsea.

Rich Wilsher, a Palace supporter and Liberal Democrat councillor, brought 32,000 balloons with him to give out to fans outside Wembley, but Brent Council officials seized most of them for health and safety reasons.

Wilsher bought the balloons on eBay after he and the Palace supporters group Holmesdale Fanatics raised about £1,200 through Crowdfunder. He previously brought about 12,000 balloons with him
to the 2016 FA Cup final, which Palace lost to Manchester United, and said it was “tradition” for their fan base at Wembley.

Transporting the balloons was a logistical challenge given Wilsher lives in Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire...

FPL360 reported that Brent Council decided large quantities of balloons can present a “serious safety risk"

Nowhere could I find how large quantities of balloons could present a serious safety risk, though.

Pathetic, small minded, bunch of hi-viz jacketed killjoy loving jobsworth numpties...

I suspect it is FA/TV driving this. ITV commentator “ we don’t want to dampen the atmosphere but don’t want the game stopped because of balloons” and there you have it. F*** the fans again

The BBC Sport website reported Palace were backed by "truly magnificent support".

The Daily Mail in their report of the game said, "If only Palace’s approach had echoed that of their fans. They were brilliant and so much better than their team, sensing the specialness of the occasion and putting on a defiant show of flags, sound and coloured smoke."

That show of support at Wembley has always involved great numbers of red and blue balloons. Even the CPFC shop were selling packs of balloons with the club's crest on them.

Wembley Stadium and Brent Council know Palace have a tradition of throwing balloons at the stadium, so they should have warned fans beforehand that balloons were a serious threat to public safety.

But, saying that, these are the same bunch of FA cretins who decided to schedule the semi-finals, where there was a very big chance of at least one northern team getting involved, on a weekend where there were planned widespread disruption (notified to the FA well in advance) on the National Rail Network...

Apologies for the rant, petty decisions by small minded "officials" tend to piss me off!

Everything about Wembley is rubbish. From the bogs to the transport. Joke of a national stadium.

Balloons are part of our culture…and as a multicultural society we have obviously been discriminated against. Large compensation amount due to the Palace fella from the council as a result of their insensitive actions. The staff will have to go on re-education courses too…

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

Yep, boils your piss. Absolute cretins of the highest order. There is method in their madness of course, they are incapable by & large of doing stuff these dropkicks are voted into the council in the first place to do.
Which primarily is making sure the bins are emptied, street lighting is adequate, filling pot holes in the street etc,etc
So they choose the path of least resistance which is to harass hard working Tax paying people.
I'm willing to bet a shovel of s*** that balloons aren't going to be an issue when they have the annual gay parade in June.
I'm also willing to bet that they will/would argue vehemently that those rainbow road crossings they painted on zebra crossings a year or two back were'nt a 'serious safety risk'

"Balloons can spread panic" - What a pyramid of piffle and 24-carat tosh to boot.

I saw same in my stand and I gave the stewards a filthy look - he laughed at me - I said to him yep your a Chelsea fan through & through. Then as I watched him celebrate when they scored & he laughed back at me.

How can English football be regarded at a family fun day out when they kill the atmosphere, the joy for the kids.

In my section on my ticket it said “ no team colours” stuff that I wore mine in end - don’t cancel the Red & Nlue

Forever Palace Proud
