As soon as I saw the match line-up I felt a sense of inevitable defeat. It was like watching the Palace of old - falling back gradually and just waiting for Chelsea to score. Where was the enterprising, attack orientated Palace we were coming to love gone? PV let us down in this one I'm afraid. And I think that game against Leicester was one too many between the quarter and the semi sapping confidence from the good run of form.

That's not to say I'm not buoyant for the future. Get back in the saddle lads. PV keep working your magic while improving the squad and let's get it right next year.

Palace Forever!

JUst getting over the game and the boasting thugs. We were already three men down so it was always going to be tough and the ref letting some nasty tackles go was not going to help.
Ward had a decent game and did as he was asked. we were a little slow into attack and seemed to be wanting to make passing triangles instead of using Wilf. We missed MO and I would have put him on at half time .
All in all it was a nice run and fun while it lasted but we are a team in transition and if this coming close season is only half as successful as last year I will be more than happy.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

I dont know that PV let us down - everyone has their own opinions of course, he is in the best place to have a grasp on players capabilities, fitness upon returning from injuries etc & of course the oppositions key players & capabilities - (at the risk of stating the obvious) thats what he gets paid for -

With CG out of the side my best hope was that Jimmy Mac would be fit enough / have enough in the engine room to give us 60 / 70 minutes of all action midfielder, this would hopefully fill the gap. CG is 22 & in the peak of fitness , Jimmy Mac is 34 & coming back from injury -

Michel Olise' injured playing for France, gave us 20 minutes -
Eze -a natural talent, still on his way back from injury -

Against the World Club & European Champions, who have a bench value that could probably buy our club, they can afford to bring on a £97 Million pound sub late in the game.

If we were to win yesterday we would have needed a considerable slice of good fortune - in any event, I was proud of the whole club yesterday, not least the support which was immense -

I am looking forward to seeing the season out, the summer transfer window & next season with a few more changes & having travelled a bit further down the road on this wonderful journey together.

Thats my tuppence worth -

I am not disappointed with the result but I am with the performance.

Against Chelsea were were always going to need a slice of luck but I think we were too negative and didn't really have a go, maybe the lack of energy was down to CG missing.

Anyway it showed how important a CG type player is for us, he has to be replaced next season.

My thoughts are pretty much as they were a third into the season when it was blatantly apparent that everything good we were doing was through Gallagher, a loanee, which says a lot about the rest of the squad, the midfield, and player acquisition on the whole.
One can happily assume that plans are in place for next season.

Don’t think we played to our potential. Hate to say it but Vieira went a bit Roy…I didn’t like the starting line up but we held our own. Then we went one down and I’m not sure he made the right calls. Fine he brought on Olise but Benteke? What has Édouard done to fall behind Christian? Especially as we didn’t play to Benteke’s strengths. Oh well.

I think that’s my thoughts as well. If anything Vieria was being to clever changing the way we play and players out of normal positions? At 1 down the substitutions we’re also strange taking off our midfielders and bringing on more attack minded players. Need both a midfield as well as an attack. Then Luka came on and I thought he would play alongside Kouyate to balance the midfield again. But no, he took Kouyate off for Luka. Strange decisions yesterday which didn’t help us in my opinion. That said, it was a great day out for Palace fans with lots of families enjoying the day. Just glad I don’t follow a club like Chelsea.

I would take issue with your point about Gallagher. Everything good we were doing was also from Olise. CG was a miss, however, MO puts teams on the back foot and he is a worry as he makes defenders second guess their positioning which creates havoc and allows us to be on the front foot.

Which he did briefly when coming on. He is our threat and he was the bigger miss yesterday as we knew CG couldn’t play from the Everton win.

I wouldn't take issue with you citing Olise. Indeed he has been a revelation, and should have started yesterday.
My main point is that in the machinery of the team, there are certain cogs that are vital for the other cogs to work. Gallagher is the vital cog that makes things happen for the other cogs to do their thing.

I think people are forgetting we played Chelsea in Febrary, and went toe to toe with them, hitting the post twice and looked the better team playing 4-3.3 and without Gallagher only to be outdone unluckily by a last minute goal, yesterdays formation, Tactics and Subs were a joke, if we don't have a good last 7 games it will go down as a very poor season

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

Perhaps PV's tactics didn't work yesterday but on a purely objective level Chelsea tend to beat us and yesterday was no exception to that, unfortunately.

At the start of the season I think we would have taken a semi-final in the FA cup and safety from relegation.

That said, I really want us to get a top 10 finish.

I want the boys to really work hard and make us proud. Yes PV has a new look side and it all looks exciting but it would be nice to be in a much better points wise then RH by the end of the season.

One of those seasons where we've been unlucky too, we've dropped at least 9 points from games we should really have won.

Gallagher will be a big miss next season. If anything, he's been our cutting edge in midfield and yesterday we looked very flat without him.

Eze flatters to decieve so far and isn't as industrious as Gallagher, not many players are. We need another midfielder like Gallagher, which won't be easy but nonetheless needed if we want to maintain our progress. A talisman if you will, especially given Zaha's influence in the team is slowly diminishing year on year.

I rewatched the highlights and on the commentary it was mentioned that we had lost our last nine games v Chelsea and in seven of the games only managed two goals.
This calls for a touch of realism - they are at a different level to us with a squad full of serial winners at an elite level.
We are a work in progress with some limitations.

If we had gone toe to toe with them from the outset and left gaps for them to exploit, the game could well have been over by half time.
We got the defensive part of our game mostly right, but the attacking part didn't function that well.
Wilf and Mateta were largely isolated and received limited service.
On the rare opportunity we had to break on them, the final pass wasn't good enough or was cut out.
For us to beat them a number of elements have to come together - a degree of luck, them being off their game and us being on our game.
Unfortunately those elements weren't present yesterday.
