As sure as night follows day our academy will churn out the type of players we now have in the first team. What SP has pulled off with its location and design is nothing short of phenomenal. Look what Chelsea academy does at Cobham. Give ours a few seasons and it will be on a par with Chelsea.

Naive to think I believe we will match Chelsea as a draw to young talent. How many people growing up in our catchment area actually support us? And that's leaving aside draw Chelsea have in the market and youth football is very much a market place nowadays. We can offer a clearer route to the first team than Chelsea can perhaps but even here they are well ahead of us with Chaloboah and James and Mount etc well established and they have the art of farming talent out on loan to a very fine art. There's a strong precedent to be attracted to Chelsea if you look at the likes of Guehi, Tomori, Livramento, Broja etc A slightly contrary point is that I suspect what we are seeing right now at Chelsea is some form of high water mark that is unlikely to be reproduced for a couple of generations - the contemporary class of 92. The type of players we have in our first team are in some ways generational talents especially if you look at Zaha, Olise, Eze and Gallagher. Only one of those was home reared. My opinion was that an academy/perusal of young players was based on recognising talent and polishing diamonds in the rough as opposed to picking up kids kicking around in SE London and turning them into Lionel Messi! Recruitment, talent spotting etc is the main focus of the game these days, especially at top level. The most romantic story is that of your Wilfried Zaha, who grows up a stones throw away from Selhurst and starts with us from day dot, but that will never be the be all and end all. WZ is a very special talent but I do get the feeling sometimes people expect there to be 10,000 of him knocking about in Sunday leagues across Southwark, Lewisham, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton etc at any given stage and we should be picking them up then.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Chelsea also have enjoyed no financial restrictions where they could hoover up all the talent in the land. And whilst I agree with the statement that we can offer a clearer route to the first team, they have more of their academy players planning in their team than we do at ours. Interesting stat about Tyrick Mitchell in the atricle - running 2k a game more under PV than RH - that feels like a lot. There is a lot of talent in his position for England so he is going to have to put a marker down this weekend.

Think you have it . From memory Manchester United recently nabbed our local youth scout! Nothing is sacred - it's a real marketplace down there.

I’m sure Parish considered things carefully before creating the academy. Plus, I’m a glass overflowing fan which obviously distorts my opinion.

The quality of youngsters who hit our first team these days has definitely improved since the likes of Tom Soares and Gary Borrowdale
