I think Vieira is getting a lot right but his insistence on mixing up the central Striker postion game to game is madness and stopping any chance of us getting a 10-15 goal a season Striker in form.

From what I’ve seen, I’m not going to be unrealistic and say there’s a 20 goal striker in our ranks but I definitely think Mateta or Edouard can score consistently once every 2-3 games to keep a steady stream of goals coming in if given the chance.

I’m of the opinion Mateta is our best out and out Striker but a lot think he’s useless and Edouard because he’s more skilful Is the way to go. Id be happy with either given a proper shot.

Strikers thrive on confidence and consistency more so than any other position. If we start one of them 2 games in a row you can see they are playing with the thought “if I don’t score by the 75th minute I’m getting swapped for the other or Benteke”.

It’s even more frustrating when we wasted about 3 seasons trying to play Benteke into form when it was clear he never would. I’m not asking for that but Vieira needs to tell whichever one he prefers ‘you have the rest of this season as main no.9.’ By the end of the season get rid if they’ve not done anything. But we will never know if we keep benching Strikers and giving Zaha a Striker position just to appease his ego.

Good post. What’s the worst that can happen, we’re not scoring now anyway.

There seems to be no logical explanation to team selection. Why would anyone put Schlupp in as a central midfielder? Who thought it a good idea to play Zaha as centre forward when 3 are sitting on the bench? Is Ayew a winger? Does Vieira know what he's doing? Recently I've started to doubt.
Choose the system you want to play and pick the players that fit that system, no square pegs in rounds holes. Some egos might be hurt, nevermind.

I got the impression from his post match interviews that this was a one-off to stifle Chelsea, which, tbf, with the 4-2-3-1 system (well that's how it seemed we wet up) we did for much of the game. However, I have to agree with your point about Schlupp and also with the OP's comments about the need to give strikers a decent run to enable them to gain the confidence needed to score goals, and especially in this league.

Agree. If we're going to play the ball on the ground, commit to Eduoard and back him. I'm sure he'll score.

If we're going to actually deliver crosses into the box, play Benteke. I'm sure he'll score.

Mateta isn't the answer.

Benteke needs good service from wide areas and Olise with his excellent delivery is effective in this respect down the wide right, but Ayew has been played in this position due to his workrate and defensive responsibilities.

I agree PV needs to pick a striker, any striker, and play him for at least 2-3 matches in a row.

What I don't understand is we've had Benteke for ages, who has never lived up to expectations. So PV goes out and spends big to get Edouard. Then he spends big to keep Mateta. Then he leaves all three strikers on the bench, and plays Wilf as the striker. I mean, WTF is up with that??

If he doesn't rate Benteke, Edouard, or Mateta, which I don't blame him, then please sell them all this summer, and try 3 new strikers.

Every other PL club, even Norwich, has a decent striker, and we haven't had one since Murray left 20 years ago. It's beyond ridiculous at this point.

Your right it is hard to understand, Edouard was a bit of a gamble never having played in any of the top leagues, but he has seen Mateta train everyday, and seen him play a lot of games, either 1. he rates him but doesn't think he is ready, 2, The deal wasn't what was said and we had to sign him, or 3, Parish/Freedman has gone over his head, Wilf and Olise will always be used as inverted wingers so what you say is right sell Edouard while he still has a value, give Benteke away on a free so someone may take him a buy someone else, maybe Plange is better than we know?

Please do stop mentioning Benteke as some kind of solution, his record is out there for all to see, and for a striker it's appalling. He stopped the club from moving on in this area, because his initial cost and salary, the club couldn't throw that sort of money at a replacement; he became irreplaceable. No other club wanted him (hardly a suprise given his salary and lack of goals) and so we were stuck. To compound the disaster, after a few half decent games knowing his contract was due to expire, rather incredibly the club gave him new one! Live and learn, eh?
Be thankful Ayew came in for a bargain £2m and totally outperformed Benteke during his stint up front during the 2019/20 season, scoring 9 crucial goals and becoming POTY.
As for Eduoard and Mateta, one would have thought that the club did all the due diligence necessary, liked what it saw, liked the price, and took the plunge. Vieira sees them everyday in training, and they have scored this season, so why he should think that Zaha should be some kind of solution is a complete mystery.
My personal opinion is that the confusion with Vieira's team selection and substitions, is a reflection of his confused thinking as how to proceed in the latter half of the season. How could it be otherwise?
As the original poster suggests, get a grip, make up your mind, stick to a team the fits the plan with the right players for the task, stop tinkering.

Thanks. The article further compounds my recent thoughts on Vieira, based on his team selection and substitutions, which, as I mention above, send out mixed messages about what he wants and how to achieve it. At this stage of the season every effort must be focused on maintaining our PL status - No dithering, no tinkering.
