Got to say I am pretty peed off with Afcon. Africa for reasons known best to itself hold their continent competition every two years. The outcome is that a whole load of Europeans who let’s be honest in the most part would be playing for England Germany France Spain etc etc if they were good enough, then clear off for a month and play for their chosen country which most have spent the minority of their lives living there (if any time at all).
The outcome for teams like Palace is appalling. We lost three quality squad players who are regulars in the first team which totally disrupts us. We are offered no compensation, in fact we even have to pay them while they are gone.
So we educate all these ‘Africans’ most from a young age, train them up to top level, and then pay them to go off to Afcon.
So can someone please tell me how that can be fair? In the case of Kouyate he still hasn’t started back yet he has in my view been vital to this season’s success.
Thé pitches are poor the climate very different and Zaha and Ayew look tired out. Hardly surprising.
Most of the African countries leaders are multi billionaires so why are they not being charged?
Or am I being unreasonable?

Whilst I agree that Afcon is unfair to the Clubs that provide the players, I would just point out that both Mane and Salah have played games for LIverpool already so I don't really understand why our trio appear to have suffered more. Always seems to happen to us, whatever regime is in charge. Is our backroom team poorer than other clubs or is it just our players are less prepared for the rigours of the game?

We know the Country they play for, before we sign them. So its no surprise they disappear every two years.
Whos fault is it, Palace for signing them or the player wanting to represent their Country?

What's the answer?

They have to hold it in the summer when its a million degrees?

You can only play if you live there?

Their nation pays their wage whilst off?

For starters play it every 4 years.
2. Play it at night in the summer
3. Pay the players wages.
A significant number of participants are dual nationality.
Maybe revisit which country you can represent.

Definitely and they should also pay their wages if they are subsequently off injured or sick

Do England pay wages when away? Or if they come back injured?

And apparently England has funded the education of Ayew and Kouyate. They both must have done their schooling over skype as they both grew up in Ghana and Senegal.

I think the OP needs to go back to school.

There is no doubt AFCON has caused a lot of problems for some clubs as it takes place mid season for the european leagues.

As far as AFCON is concerned I feel it should only be held every 4 years same as Euros and ideas like holding World Cup every 2 years should be shelved. Many players already are showing clear signs of fatigue and this puts undue pressure on smaller sides who do not have the financial clout to have a bench like Man City.

I also feel the relaxation of eligibility rules has had a detrimental effect as clubs can buy a player with knowledge that a players eligibility is to one country and that can be changed so easily. Players Like Olise and Eze for instance have a number of options and so the AFCON dilema may soon apply to them.

I think the FA should be looking at the rules concerning squad composition.

After Brexit and removal of freedom to work in UK for EU citisens We could now look at restricting number of Non British Players in squads, and on the pitch at any time.

We could increase substitutions to 5 with at least 2 being under 23 thus allowing young talent to get their chance.

We could change definition of home grown in squads to mean eligibile for a Home Nation thus when a player chooses to play for another nation they are no longer homegrown.

The loan system is also detrimental to smaller and medium sized clubs. Clubs like Chelsea loaning out 25 players around Europe is not good for football. Many of these are not young players getting senior experience or senior players trying to get regular football after an injury. Last I heard proposals on reforming this were in hand but some clubs were objecting.

I think the impact of AFCON is overstated. Aside from players in the two finalists the rest normally only miss a couple of PL games once every two years. Maybe the PL could just call a two-week international break for the next one and further reduce the impact. African football needs more investment and so in reality it needs to hold AFCON every two years. If teams want top African players this is the cost and to my mind it is pretty insignificant. Personally I think it's great to have Palace players winning important tournaments. It doesn't happen very often.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.
