It is pleasing to note that F1 bosses have decided to stop going through the virtue signalling ritual that is 'taking the knee' before the start of races during 2022.

The gesture started in 2020 following the BLM furore after George Floyd's death, mainly influenced by Lewis Hamilton wanting to highlight the anti-racism message. They will instead encourage drivers to use their own discretion to support the 'We Race As One' initiative.

There's little doubt that the gesture has an insignificant impact on behaviour. Wilf demonstrates by standing before a match instead, which probably has greater impact.

It would be hoped that football might follow the lead of F1 and cease using the, now meaningless, gesture of taking the knee.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Let's hope football decides to end this nonsense soon, too.

It was never going to achieve anything, and what a surprise, it hasn't.

I think you are right ^^^^

I hate the gesture politics of 'black' people who are top of their tree. (black, is in quote marks, because Hamilton's mother is white)

I disengage, I turn the page.

I've never understood peoples issue with it. It takes about 10 seconds and its intention is good.

No its not going to solve racism instantaneously, or by itself but its at least a statement of intent.

I think the issue MrRobbo, is that this over-hyped gesture makes only a few people who participate feel better about themselves whilst not making a blind bit of difference to the issue of racism that continues to widely exist.

I'd like to see football adopt a similar, proactive stance to F1.

Football has - in every other country except ours.

It's what I keep saying, footballers have a lot of power within the game the real issue with racism in football is the failure of the authorities to do something meaningful about it.

The players should tell FIFA and UEFA to start getting tough or they will go on strike. But they would rather take the knee which has done nothing as far as I can tell.

And where is the PFA in all this? Plenty of weasel words but that's about it.

I'm not saying its going to solve anything. It didn't really do anything at the start, and now it is just ignored. I just don't see why it infuriates people so much (mostly 50+ white guys)

Also the footballing powers are anything but proactive.

Just a thought, but from my perspective it may seem as though people may feel that they are being 'preached at'. The knee is supposedly a symbol of defiance and you could ask defiance against who? The fans? Who pay the player's astronomical wages?

Racism in football is of course an issue that needs to be resolved as there is no place for it but proactive action and tangible solutions are needed, not empty gestures which can be interpreted as made towards the very people on which the sport relies.

Perhaps many people would rather see a field full of millionaires get on with doing the job they are paid to do, and fans have paid to see, as opposed to protesting a societal issue that could perhaps benefit from some funding to find solutions,

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
