Cat gets knocked over

At around about six there's a couple of people standing around outside our place on the roadside. So I walk over to see and it's a youngish grey cat that's been knocked over onto the side of the road....Presumably by a car that's long gone....back legs seem to have gone but no real blood around. Hissing away. So there we are outside not knowing who owns it, if it has an owner...I reckon it does as it looks well fed....but we are there not really knowing what to do. So one of us stands guard over it due to the cars and a couple of us go knocking on doors but no joy and we couldn't find an owner. We put a blanket over it as it's getting colder and my missus tries getting through to the RSCPA people....But she's 10 in an automated queue which would take ages....She also put the message out on a local forum...One of us was this Irish fella who picked the cat up (which I wasn't happy about) but I suppose someone had to....so we eventually we got a cage together and because we couldn't find the owner the missus took he/she off to the vets. The vet takes her details and will keep it in for the night, but hopefully they know what to do come the morning and it's alright. It's all happening....and all I want is a sandwich. One nice aside is that shortly after the missus gets back from the vet someone on the forum came down to our place looking for the cat...as she apparently is frequently involved in cat rescues. Seemed like a nice woman.

I just don't understand why people own a pet which they allow to roam the streets.
