Earlier today I played a Bob Dylan album that includes the track 'I'm Alright Ma'. There are two lines that have always amused me since I first heard them in 1965:
'But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked'
It's daring, true, surprising and funny all at the same time. Clever writing. No-one would ever think of suggesting the Queen might be in a similar state.

Then there are some lyrics that are just plain suggestive and dirty. Chuck Berry sings about taking his girl for a drive and when things start to get interesting he 'Couldn't unfasten her safety belt'. Billy Fury is teased by his girl, but he only gets 'Halfway to Paradise'.

Lyrics in songs are often misheard like Jimi Hendrix singing 'Excuse me while I kiss the sky' not 'kiss this guy' as a lot of folk thought apparently.

Songs trigger memories and resonate in many different ways. There are hundreds, probably thousands that impact on our lives like Pink Floyd impacts on eagleman (the signature on his posts).

So, what can you tell us about songs that mean something to you or words in a song that you misunderstood when you first heard it played?

Four hundred children and a crap in the field

Oh! It's 4 hungry children and a crop in the field

David Bowie's Starman

There's a starman waiting in the sky
His nose is not for blowing
Cos his nose is always dry.

It was years before I realized it was actually

He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile

Why worry about TODAY when TOMORROW will be even worse.

Chris Tarrant used to come out with alternative lyrics when he was the breakfast show host on Capital. One that always stuck with me was by Paul Young 'every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you' Apparently this is sung to a worker in a butchers who's thieving the stock.

Peter Kaye also does a routine where he mixes up lyrics, which can be seen on YouTube and is quite funny.

For years I thought Eric Clapton sang:

Won't you be my four legged woman, I will be your four legged man...

I literally asked someone what that meant and the looked at me like I was a moron (I guess I am).

In fairness to Eric the song was called Forever Man.

I wonder if Desmond Decker has put out that fire yet.

When I started this thread I thought more of you might describe the memories triggered by a song or it's lyrics.

I guess the misheard lyrics are more fun. When I first heard Burl Ives singing 'Mersey boats and dozeydotes' on Children's Favourites with Uncle Mac I couldn't figure it at all.

As for the memorable stuff. Whenever I hear or play All Shook Up by Elvis it takes me back to the jukebox in Morello's Ice Cream Parlour in Broadstairs where I first heard it.

Another memory jogger is Guantanamera by The Sandpipers. It was played everywhere in Ibiza in 1969 when on holiday there with my present wife while we were still 'going out'.
