I can't read the full article, just the first couple of paragraphs, because I don't subscribe to the Telegraph. But I, like many others on here I know, have been a supporter since the late 50s. Not sure how old I was when Dad first took me, but it became a regular outing every other week. He used to meet his brother and wife in roughly the same place on the Holmesdale terrace every time. The other interesting fact in the Telegraph article before it faded out, was the fact that the old chap's grandfather worked at the Crystal Palace. My great grandfather was a master of ceremonies there and my grandfather's brother was a carpenter responsible for building the various exhibition stands. Lovely old bloke called Sid who saw the Palace burn down from his house in Addiscombe. He suffered what I was told was a nervous breakdown as a result and the poor chap became a changed man because the old Crystal Palace was his life. I've still got some of his lovely old tools.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

My Great-Grandfather worked there as well. My dad remembered being on a bus after playing football and seeing the fire in the distance.

Must have been devastating to see the old place in flames. Probably others on here with a connection to the Crystal Palace - I guess there were a huge number of people employed there. Anyway, fascinating stuff.

My mum remembers being taken there as a small child and says it smelled funny inside. Warm in the summer as well you’d think.

I've been going since 1967 and this thread makes me feel like a mere youth. I'll only be celebrating 55 years with Palace next season.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |

My Dad watched the flames that demolished the Crystal Palace from Blackheath. My grandfather was a part time turnstile operator there. I seem to remember being told of the regular Thursday night firework displays at the Palace. Needless to say my Nan,Mum and Aunt always used to get in for free.

I first went when I was about 12. That's 65 years ago. I was taken by my older brother who first went in 1940. He passed last year, so he was a supporter for 81 years.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Two incidents in my life that I have no recall of:- Apparently as a small child I fell into the Thames from a boat and more importantly I was taken to the Palace as a small child with my parents ( we lived in Grange Road, next to Whitehorse Road ) just before the war.

Good to know there are still many who remember the days of Johnny Byrne, Cliff Holton, Ronnie Allen & Vic Rouse. My Dad started taking me when I was 5 or 6 but the first game I can remember was the Palace/West Ham match to open the Crystal Palace sports centre in 1964. West Ham had recently won the FA Cup & Palace had won promotion to Division 2. It was, apparently, the first all seated football match in Britain.
