I know it’s the way football is going, but playing out just for the sake of it is pointless.
We need to mix it up. The keeper needs to bang a few long. The other teams defence know we will roll it Anderson , who passes it side ways. A couple more passes and one of ours is normally under pressure and knocks it upfield anyway.
It’s good that we are comfortable on the ball at the back, but a couple of long kicks with the big lumps we’ve got up front , with someone waiting for a flick on would surely be a better option sometimes.
First half against millwall we seemed to have bundles of possession , but not much that really mattered. Knocking it sideways then forward a bit, then back a bit, then sideways again. 20 seconds and we are back where we started, but panicking as the opposition forwards are chasing the ball down.

I am with you on this - its OK having a plan a, but an occasional use of plan b keeps people on their toes.

A style of play that needs the right type of player to implement it. In theory the CB should immediately look for the midfielder player in space, who with instant control can get things moving. A bit like having Iniesta, Xavi, and Messi to pass to.
Yesterday we had Schlupp in central midfield ha ha!

Agree 100% we've become too predictable and we're not actually very good at it. Not sure we've the players.

Also going backwards and recycling the ball too much when we're in the opposition half.

I agree with the OP. We can have it as a style but there's a time and place. It didn't work when it went to Ward anyway, tends to only work with the second pass to Mitchell. However, without Zaha, he had no release. Hence the constant side to side and back passing. You need at least one focal point, ideally two or three. We had none last night. We were pretty lucky boys.
We also sat deep for too long. I thought Roy had made a comeback.
If you're deep and play out from the back, then you are struggling to get out of your own half already. Add in the opposition press and you're in for a hiding. We were lucky we didn't lose 3-1. Brighton will be gutted this morning.
If we do the same against Liverpool, we're in trouble. It is clear they press high and bring everyone up - leaving just Van Dyke back. Any armchair manager or even 6 year old fan, can see that you should pop it over the top to Liverpool. Especially down the wings. Turn the defenders is the obvious and not exactly rocket science tactic - no point in trying to match them with the exact same style but with worse players. We'll see won't we.

Brighton sussed us out and pressed our midfield so we had no out ball. We needed to be braver last night and push the whole team higher up the pitch. Then when we do manage to beat the press we are practically through on goal and they retreat backwards to defend their goal. Liverpool will press us similarly, they are missing some star players but it will still be tough.

I’ve never liked it, it just gives us all heart attacks and feels like a disaster waiting to happen. But to be fair, we’re so much better at it than I thought we’d be, even Tommo who is more of a good old fashioned centre back did well with it.

Watching a lot of teams though, the point is to keep possession, but what’s the point when all you do is tippy tappy across the back, give everyone kittens, then end up giving the ball away anyway? usually in a dangerous position.

Doubt it, they’ll probably see it as a weakness and their forwards will be running around like headless chickens to put us under pressure

Works well if you mix it up a bit with a penetratuing long ball over the top now and again - like Brighton were going last night.

To be avoided with Joel and Tommo in the team as neither of them seem to be able to pass the ball accurately.

I think tommo did okay considering having the ball at his feet and passing are not his strong points

Also, this gets to me. We get a free kick either on the edge of the half way line or just in the opponents half and we then pass it sideways, then back to a defender. Then when under pressure it goes back to the keeper who passes it to a defender who under pressure lumps it forward and the opponents get the ball back. Okay, it doesn’t happen all the time but it’s so frustrating. What’s wrong with passing it forward or lifting it to our forward players to hopefully start an attack. Yes, we might lose it earlier to our opponents but at least we can press and put them under pressure. Rant (if that’s what it is) over :-)
