Amazon To Stop Accepting Visa Credit Cards

I got an email from Amazon this morning telling me I had to change my payment method. No biggie for me as I have a Mastercard however I am sure this will inconvenience many. About 30 years ago a colleague suggested I get both Mastercard and Visa cards (I was travelling a lot for work). He pointed out that there can be difficulties with either. I am glad I took his advice over the years I have found all sorts of issues such as buying concert tickets you had to use one card type. Anyway that is my advice to anyone have one of each.

It is happening all over HSBC/ First Direct have dumped visa debit cards and replaced it with MasterCard.

Just to point out your visa debit card, probably issued by your bank, is unaffected. Hopefully some enterprising businesses will make some inroads into Amazon.

Yup sorry I should have mentioned debit cards unaffected. It's a big decision by Amazon I wonder if it will impact sales. I am not sure who the villain is here, Amazon or Visa. With all the talk of cryto currencies I am surprised that someone like Facebook or Amazon hasn't launched their own payment system to undercut Visa and Mastercard and I don't mean an Amazon credit card which is just white labelling. There is a market out there for a cheaper payment system, business's that deal in lots of small amounts like a newsagent the current fees must be an overhead. Anyway I expect they will agree a deal at some point.

On a slightly different slant - Ebay used to use Paypal as its preferred payment option, now they do the payment in house (no doubt to be able to keep a bigger slice of the overall transaction profits)

I prefer to make payments with my current VISA Credit Card rather than debit cards. Might get an AMEX or Mastercard if this issue is here to stay.

It's worth looking at Mastercard but at the moment I use paypal to reduce how many times I have to type out those details. Only having one account that you use for the Internet is also sensible as is having a strict overdrawn limit to reduce possible damage. Edited by Stirlingsays (17 Nov 2021 2.25pm)

So even though your Paypal account is linked to your credit card it's not the same as paying with a credit card.

I concur with the earlier thoughts about using one payment method though and a fixed approach. It's easy to get carried away on sites like Amazon by ordering stuff you don't need, due to the overriding convenience factor.

You are right but the problem is, it so convenient to shop using them, wider range, no hassle getting to shops, shop while on sofa, delivered to your door. They are not going to lose customers and they know it
