There was a little shop outside my school in Hackbridge, known as the Tuck Shop. Run by an upright gent with a huge waxed moustache who, when asked for 2 ounces of sweets, would rattle out from the big jar precisely the amount in the scales, then add an extra one with a wink, pour them into a small paper bag and twiddle it closed with a flourish. Wonderful.

Then came decimalisation and the EU. Telling us we had to use metric measurements rather than imperial that we were all used to. A greengrocer was convicted for selling bananas weighed on imperial scales. We managed to keep our pints of beer, but the imperial crown on the glass had to be replaced with a CE stamp. Nonsense.

At last it seems like we'll soon start to see the crown on our pint glasses again and be able to buy a pound of apples thanks to the government planning to allow the return to imperial measurements. One in the eye for the EU. As Boris once said "why should we be coerced into using the measurements of Napoleon?".

It pleases me I can tell you. I still weigh myself in stones, measure things in feet and inches and take delight in occasionally reaching 100 mph when I drive. But don't tell anyone.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I could only ever afford a quarter and used to buy sweets from the newsagents at Hayes Station. My mum used to work there. I used to also buy the ha'penny sweets. 50 aniseed balls etc. My pocket money was about 25p.

I totally agree about stone. Kgs are not useful for weight and metres and cms are not useful for height. A litre of beer would be fine but a pint's about right. Half litre is for girls or Aussies.

Just one thing Old Geezer. Please don't go round the pubs looking for two ounces of sherbert. It's a fair few grand and pretty dangerous.

My mum and dad ran a sweet shop, I often helped and, indeed did use to weigh sweets out from a jar and put them in a little white paper bag. They were running it when decimalisation was introduced, a bit of a nightmare for them I believe

We were addicted to the penny sweet "cola bottles" when I was a kid. Our favourite prank was to save up 2 or 3 quid then go round to the corner shop and make the poor old lady count out 300 of the buggers.

I look forward to the return of the sitcom ‘30.48 cm in the Grave’.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I know that your comment was tongue in cheek (again) but the reason that Aussies drink small measures of beer is because it warms up too quickly and they would rather have two small measures of cold beer rather than one large one where the second half is warm

Fings ain't wot they used t'be eh AS?

Also seems like I may have accidentally started a topic for a new thread with metric conversions of song titles, like for instance, '12.874752 Kilometres High' by The Byrds. [Link]

Even further off-topic I remember a bloke in a pub many years ago saying how much he liked the song My Feet Begin to Crumble.
What?
You know. It goes. The concrete and the clay beneath my feet begin to crumble.

With the big EU basher wetherspoons bloke closing his pubs early because he has nobody to pour pints, you might just be looking at an empty pint glass with er on it, and the way these lot are running the country, sweet shops might be a thing of the past, its just packets in supermarket.

Interesting midlands, makes sense when you think about it.
