Palace Old Geezer Midhurst 03 Aug 21 4.27pm | |

I was sifting through some old stuff earlier and found something that set me thinking about my favourite Palace Goal. Jim Cannon, playing at left back, scored the only goal to beat Leeds at SP in the 70s. No idea of the date, but I was with my brother-in-law who is a staunch Leeds supporter and he was mortified. I enjoyed that one. There have been some crackers over the years scored by the likes of Byrne, Rogers, Mulligan, Hilaire not to mention Hopkin LTCO. In more recent times we've seen some good, and important, goals from Pardew, Ambrose, Wright, Gayle, Townsend and, of course, Wilf. You will remember many others I'm sure. But, I think my favourite has to be Benteke scoring at the Amex last season. Here's why: 1 It was a last gasp winner Your turn.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Dougie V Stockport, Kept us in the league in dramatic fashion. I couldn't get tickets for the game so me and a few mates had to sit through the nail biter in the Stockport end! Hopkin did a very dodgy clearance on our own D (Looked suspiciously like handball) and then it felt like time slowed as Dougie ran the ball into the Stockport penalty box before blasting it in.

Hopkins must be up there for the sheer importance and timing, great goal to. Have to say all at the semi final v Liverpool, that was a magical day out, Andy Grays? Townsends at city must the actual best goal ever scored technically, he was robbed for the goal of season by Lineker etc. The goal that never was, Clive Allen-at Coventry, ball went in from a 30 yard free kick, in to back of net, came out I think, and game played on? He can also take some credit for the best spontaneous pitch invasion in the Fa cup quarter final at loftus road , celebrating qpr goal in front of 5000 palace fans after running the length of the pitch .That Cannon night in 79 in front of 52, 000 at selhurst was special to be fair!

Yes, forgot that and the handball, the tv mentions it, and the Irish fellas header at Sheff Weds for the relegation match needs a mention.

Was at Hillsborough for that one too, though thankfully was in the Palace end this time. As I recall when the Sheff Wed player equalised (Think it was Leon Clarke?) he got so enthusiastic in his goal celebrations he kicked the hoardings and broke his foot!

For pure s51thousery and hilarity, John Terry's is my favourite own goal. It went miles towards keeping us up too. Ambrose v Sheffield Wednesday and Zaha's 2nd v Brighton are obvious standouts.

Bit random, but I’m trying to steer from the obvious ones, Steve Lovell v Wrexham in 1981 for me, Here’s why, we hadn’t won away for 18 months in a time when I was going to every away game so it was a special moment Wrexham we’re bottom, we were 2nd off bottom, it was foggy, freezing cold, we’d had stones, bottles and the kitchen sink thrown at us in the police escort going to the ground. We were penned in behind what was a cage not a fence in the ground, a real horrible day, but when Lovell popped up to poke in the winner 5 minutes from time we went berserk, all 50 of us, he jumped up on the fence/cage right in front of us, if iPhones existed then I would’ve had a great shot Those were the days
