I was amazed to learn that Europe has been having serious floods for centuries, even before climate change was an industry creating loads of well paid jobs I thought the current floods in Germany were caused by the actions of bad people in recent decades having listened to various media reporting.

188 dead and more unaccounted for. Very sad situation and yet there are still morons who will use the death of others for cheap and disgusting self satisfaction. Their will also be 188 families and extended families going through such a huge trauma.

The halo of goodness around you must be visible from space. On a brighter note, your posts on here are treated by the general readership with the contempt they deserve. My post highlighted that the current floods are not a new thing in Europe or necessarily linked to climate change. On a pedantic note, 188 fatalities does not mean 188 affected families but as usual you do demonstrate a lack of logic in your rather twisted posts. From what I understand, the flooding does have historical precedents so hysteria about 'global warming' does not really stick. But the bigger story is political, all around how a warning system that predicted this all days in advance, has been largely ignored. Given the scale of deaths, and the destruction, then it is clearly a major tragedy with bad weather causing mayhem all over Europe (saw footage this morning from Kiev that had tube stations being flooded). Horrible scenes. Heart-breaking for our European friends.

in 1956 the Netherlands ( and even much of eastern England) had a storm-surge & catastrophic flooding. Many dead and billions of quids worth of damage. Simultaneous...spring tide, weeks of torrential rain, storm surge, high winds. It does happen from time to time.

Going solely by your link, there have been 27 fatal floods in Europe this century (so far - still 80% of this century yet to happen). That compares to 18 fatal floods the previous century, 8 fatal floods the century before that. "Europe has been having serious floods for centuries" - it always amazes me that people can look at a set of facts and only see what they want to see. Edited by Seagles (19 Jul 2021 2.42pm)

Edited by Seagles (19 Jul 2021 2.42pm) Town and cities were almost exclusively built next to water. Whether that be coast or river matters not. Water was, and still is, the life giver. Either for drinking, fishing or transportation, it was necessary to be near water. When towns and cities were smaller, the rainfall could easily make it's way to the rivers and streams, and eventually the sea/ocean. But, guess what? We expanded the towns and cities to accommodate the population that thrived from the water the lived next to. Now, the water needs to come through those towns and cities to get to the oceans and seas. "it always amazes me that people can look at a set of facts and only see what they want to see"

Obviously the reporting of events in the modern age is different to hundreds of years ago. You are implying the total number of floods in the previous two centuries was 16. The wiki list is clearly not complete for the older historical records but much more so for recent times. But you know this I assume. Seems the flood warning systems need review Originally posted by Seagles
