In my heyday I used to spend a fair amount of my pay on clothes.

As a proud Mod around the Croydon scene in the 60s I had my suits made to measure, bought shoes from Raouls, had slim fit tapered Ben Sherman shirts and wouldn't be seen out in anything other than Levi jeans. And they definitely didn't have holes in the knee. We had to look smart and fashionable in those days.

Nowadays I hardly ever wear a suit and if I do it's an off the peg M&S job. My shirts are mostly Marks too, although I confess to having some from Primark. And they're definitely not slim fit! As for my jeans I really can't worry about the label these days. They have to be those stretchy denim ones and, tbh I'm not fussed where they come from.

But, when I see folk around town now, wearing shorts and tee shirts (or, worse no shirt) looking like they're dressed more for the beach than the shops I wonder whether people are at all bothered about keeping up with the latest fashions today.

Or, more worrying, is it fashionable to look like a scruffy Herbert? I don't wear top names like I used to, but I do try look half decent. Do you actually care about what you look like when you're out?

Just musing really, while I wait for our new manager to be announced.

Once a Mod always a Mod it's a way of life
Back in the the Day well the early 80's It was label city. I once spent a whole weeks wages on a Tacchini tracksuit ( I still have the top though I can't fit in it must have shrunk) I had Pringle jumpers and Lyle and scott roll necks along with Fila and Benetton tops and a leather hunter jacket. oooh those were the days, these nearly all ended up being worn to work and ruined on a building site. I then quickly evolved into a MOD style Thank you Mr P Weller of Woking. My wardrobe is now a mix of the two. When I worked in the office Pre lockdown. I always wore a white slim fit penny collar shirts with a slim tie with tie pin and cuff links. I also love a sharp suit and have a few Tonic ones from Jump the Gun. Working from home I tend to wear something like a Fred Perry, Levis and a pair of Sambas. For Mod inspired stuff Check out 157 shop near Portsmouth and Adaptor clothing [Link]

There is a great book about the 80's clothes and
Terrace fashion. Called.
Casuals: The Story of a Terrace Cult by Phil Thornton

I am now looking at buying some Peaky blinders inspired clothes as thats what my daughter wants at her wedding next year

Keep the Faith

As someone from the same era I'm guessing that your suits were made to measure as ready made suits weren't around then. it was John Collier and Hepworths that dominated the high streets back then.

I was working in commercial finance in Croydon in the late sixties and early seventies and Ben Sherman were clients of mine.

Yep Midlands, Hepworths were good. Funnily enough Burtons were also quite obliging. They made me an overcoat I wanted despite saying that patch pockets didn't go well with Raglan sleeves. Very warm and I kept it for ages.

Ben Sherman still around I think?

The name is but I think that it's gone bust and re-emerged several times in the intervening years.

I seem to recall that when I knew them they were owned either fully or in part by the Irish government as I remember flying to Dublin to see them

I'd forgotten about Burtons. Hepworths operated a revolving credit facility and you could have clothing to the value of several times your monthly payment. I remember buying my first suits from them when I started work in 1965 and paying £5 per month.

They had a book of designs and you could choose which design you wanted for every part of the garment being made and when I was a teenager I had them make a very odd knee length jacket out of Harris Tweed with flared sleeves, an inverted pleat at the back and every other oddity that I could pick out of the style book. I used to wear this jacket with a huge amount of pride every Sunday when going to Eel Pie Island in Twickenham to see a teenage Eric Clapton playing in their resident band The Yardbirds.

Your thread has stirred up some long forgotten memories

I always liked Fred Perry polo shirts.
Harrington jackets got their name from the character played by Ryan O’Neal in Peyton Place.

Bit of a 'Face' by the sound of things Midlands. Bet you knocked 'em dead at Eel Pie. I only went there once to see Pink Floyd, but The Yardbirds played at one of the regular Tuesday night gigs at Wallington Public Hall.

Good times eh?
