It’s going to be interesting to see what happens in industries that rely (or relied) heavily on cheap EU labour. Basic economics tells us that if there is a supply shortage of labour then wages will have to increase to a level where it is sufficient for demand to take that wage. So rising wages = good on the face of it.

These industries that rely on this labour however are typically industries where profit margins are very low and rely on sales volume for profit (hospitality, supermarkets, agriculture etc) so the only way for higher wages to be sustainable would be for prices to go up. To the consumer this means higher costs for your weekly shop, a pint down your local, and all sorts of regular weekly spending. In a wider context this could quite feasibly push inflation up quickly and put pressure on the BoE to raise interest rates, possibly the last thing they want to do in an economy suffering the effects of an 18 month pandemic.

FWIW I think Tim Martin is right in that the government will be forced (in the short term at least) to make it a lot easier/cheaper for unskilled labour to be able to come in from elsewhere to fill the labour gaps, otherwise the knock on will cause the treasury far bigger problems when it comes to wanting to borrow further if interest rates are forced to go up to keep inflation in check.

Lots of jobs now for the average man are useless, once you take out fares and cost of tools etc, including London Taxi driving!Its the huge salaries at the top that bring the average wage up, lots are working full time and still earn fcuk all at the end of the year! Forget all this spend spend spend to help out richie, keep your hard earned in your bank, keep the old tv or car until they break down for good, let the top earners sp[end spend spend, they can afford it!
