Either traditional Londoners, or 'New Londoners'....

an exodus in all but name. The statistics are worrying. Partly the general trend over the last 40 years and partly a Covid shock.

Certainly it is obvious that very many of the Eagles on here do not live in our manor. Although they once did.

Most Charlton fans live in Kent, Gillingham seems to be popular with them. Not that many Millwall live in Bermodnsey these days they seem to have migrated outwards as well.

This is not part of a general trend as you say mate, London’s population has increased year on year for over thirty years. This is purely Covid related.

Why pay high London rents when you can now work from home anywhere?

Also, out of interest, why do you describe this as worrying?

I’d say the year on year population increase was more worrying,

dunno. After the fall of Rome, it lost about 99% of its population.

Detroit is a derelict city, not nice.

Before Thatcher, London was in decline for decades.

Rural Ireland de-populated for nearly 200 years after the Famine.

Loss of population is often seen in history. For many different reasons, some ok , some bad.

London is still packed. Once offices start to go back, even partially, I expect things will at the least, level out.

I rented a flat out recently for£1475. Last three years we had been getting £1650!

The demand just wasn’t there. Will return though

Coupla good points you make there Tom. The population increase is indeed, worrying. Much, I suspect not coming from our own indigenous folk.

And people have become more isolated from their workplaces. Clearly realising that they can work from anywhere.

Why stay in London?

I was born and bred in Wallington. Dad came from Mitcham - a hardened Palace supporter passed down through his family. Great, great grandfather was Master of Cerimonies at the Cystal Palace before it burnt down.

Various reasons brought me to Sussex, mainly job, but also married daughter living down this way.

Mobile workforce. Mobile family. Mobile population.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I left 20 years ago, lived in South London, just couldn't afford to buy working for Royal Mail down there. Luckily was able to transfer to the North and could get a mortgage on a property that could only dream about down South. Low crime rate. Watch Palace away, easier to get tickets for. In a perfect world I would have stayed but it ain't perfect.

It hasn’t sounded like London for a long time. It either sounds like a group rap video or lots of little post graduate reunions and marketing account executives and managers trying to sound and be impressive.

Mixed feelings really.

For me, London is definitely losing its vitality. Central London is still buzzing, or rather will be once again, and undoubtedly looks better than it used to do but as you move out through the zones, it becomes so much more of a mixed picture.

A good example is where my mum still lives in East Dulwich. On the face of it, then thriving. Lordship Lane is full of designer shops and bars and coffee shops. But most of the side roads are now blocked off, making it a nightmare to travel through. And where my mum lives the nice yummy mummy types are trying to get a bus-route redirected because they don't want the noise of it.

And yet down the road in Peckham, you have gang related shootings and stabbings going on next to art galleries on Peckham Rye Lane.

Its bizarre. Schizophrenic almost. Like South London on Prozac. One half of it wanting to see everything through a fuzzy prism that ignores the fact that London is a trading city that is meant to be busy and noisy whilst the other half are being submerged into an alternative reality in which they are allowed to commit the most henious of crimes which nobody really wants to talk about. As long as it is black people being s*** to other black people then nobody really caring about it. Almost like nobody involved in any meaningful way expects any better of them.
