You've just spent 15 minutes on the phone trying to get a reduction in the cost of renewing your car insurance. It has increased hugely this year even though the car has been sitting idle most of the time during lockdown.

They reluctantly agree to knock 30 quid of the original quote and you say 'Thanks, it's a pity the company didn't give me that price in the first place - would've saved us both the trouble.'

Anyhow, you've achieved what you set out to do and as far as you're concerned you've finished the conversation. But then, following their script this telesales professional asks -

'Is There Anything Else I Can Help You With Today?'

What's that all about? Well, it's probably an old man kinda thing, but you have to get your amusement any way you can so my response to this inane and irrelevant question may be - 'I've got a heap of washing up to do so you can do the drying if you like' or 'I wouldn't mind a hand with mowing the lawn.'

Why are they trained to ask this question? What else could they expect to help with? Do they really think you're going to ask them to insure another car?

Maybe I should just say 'No thanks, you've been a great help already.' But....
really!

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I phoned British Gas a few years back they completely failed to solve my problem and at the end of the call she tried to flog me a deal for electricity. Well I exploded you haven't solved my problem but you think you've earned the right to sell me something else?

By the way I have a British Gas annual service contract for my central heating it includes an annual service which I have not had since June 2019 and they still will not offer me a date.

Would love to hear from anyone else if they have the same issue. What are we paying for? Ah but its the virus I hear you say, really. Anyone notice that BG has been heavily advertising new boilers? So they can some out to install one just not service their exiting customers.

The service thing has gone downhill. Once he phoned at the end of the 9am-1pm slot to say he’d be 40 minutes. I couldn’t do it. Another time he called well after the time slot. Again I couldn’t do it. Had to cancel the service that never happened and rebook online. Boiler doesn’t hold a stable pressure now and I have to monitor it. I wonder if he did anything when he was here. At least they have a phone number. I’d avoid cheap online only companies.

The engineers are in the middle of a range of strikes over TCs.

Yup but that started at the end of December 2020 what have they been doing before that.

I would have more sympathy if it wasn't for their daily adverts we will come and fit a new boiler for you.

It sounds like the safety valve could be letting by. Its connected on the boiler to the small copper pipe through the wall behind your boiler. These let water out if it gets above 3 bar pressure. Once they let by they generally start letting by at lower and lower water pressures and eventually run all the time. Now for the interesting bit
(for once) .
The water in the heating system expands as it heats up. This expansion is 'taken up' within an expansion vessel in or around your boiler. I won't bore you! Anyhow everyone take note.
If your expansion vessel has lost its air charge or the bladder is split inside then expansion is happening all over your heating system.
If your system pressure is increasing more than normal it could be this.
Generally feel free to pm me if you need any advice. I cannot give physical DIY boiler advice but may prevent you getting robbed blind by guiding you towards the correct questions to ask.

I didn't necessarily expect my post to lead into 'How to fix your gas boiler problems', but as it happens, I too have been waiting since last October for a date from BG to carry out an annual service.

I've now been given a date towards the end of this month which I await with trepidation. Funnily enough I think the call I made (just after Christmas) to complain about how I'd been treated and to fix a date also ended with the 'Anything else I can help you with? question.

I don't recall my response on that occasion!

I spoke to an Estate Agent the other day for about four minutes on the blower, at the end of the call he asked if I would compete a customer satisfaction survey. For what? Four minutes of his f@cking time!

‘So, that’s two egg mayonnaise, a prawn Goebbels, a Hermann Goering, and four Colditz salads.’

Anything else we can help you with?
