Well my pa used to play darts and i would go to the social club as a 12-13 year to watch and have a biden i guess (hair rub) from the older blokes.
Hello mate how ya doing and all that. At that time they were all adults and I was a kid. At 18 I became a member and could have an ale etc and it seemed overnight that those men became my mates.
How weird now but.... oh well hope others can grasp what I mean, just another load of waffle but hey ho nothing ventured etc

I'm sure we used to refer to each other as mates when I was at school. In fact, one of my 'mates' back in the infants at Hackbridge is still a good mate of mine now over 65 years later.

I moved house 10 years ago and have accumulated a new bunch of mates here to add to those I've acquired over the years.

One pet hate of mine though, are over familiar shop assistants who I don't know from Adam and who greet me as 'mate' as if I was their long lost chum (mate) and who ask 'Are you alright there?'
What happened to 'Good Morning Sir, how may I be of assistance to you today?'

So, there you are mate, I've responded to your post and managed to get in an old geezer's whinge at the same time.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I am reminded of a question that used to be posed by barbers :
"Something for the weekend Sir ?"

When I was of a modest age I was pleased if there were a lot of blokes waiting for a haircut so I could have a sneaky peek at Parade or Titbits.

The question about the weekend didn't arise due to my youthful and inexperienced appearance.

On this particular subject,
wasn't Mates a brand of condom?

'Mates' is a brand of condoms.
I cannot vouch for their comfort or sensitivity.

Yup you are correct mates are mates from kids but it was more when adults turn into mates. Even 50 and 60 year olds when you are just a slip of a lad.
I must admit I'm a bit pal, mate, love, sweetheart and all that. Got to work on my PR I guess

dont think theres any harm in that, its how its meant.
most are just being friendly, but I do get how it can be annoying also.

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

I’m very close to where you live and chances are if you’ve visited my place of work and have been wearing anything Palace related I’ve probably called you mate.
