Does anybody else find this gross ? Can you imagine this being acceptable in other walks of life ? - golf - debates in Westminster Considering the number of sliding tackles and players going to ground, they are rolling in somebody else's gob. At a time of paranoia about germs, surely we can stamp it out. Kick spitting out of football, No Saliva Matters. You now get a yellow card for removing your shirt, how about for spitting ?

Disagree, I played the game at amateur level and for several years as a semi-professional. It’s a necessary evil I’m afraid. Like with most things, there’s a time and a place for sure but on the football field during an intense period of high exertion, when clearing the nasal passage and being able to breathe freely, in order to re oxygenate the blood and maintain energy levels is of vital importance, it is what it is. Good point PV, but a tricky one. Soccer players aren't the only culprits. Our rugby chums are also fond of a good clear out. You mention tennis players as examples of non spitters, but at least they can discreetly use their towel every couple of minutes. Anyway, I can vaguely remember playing our game many, many years ago and I'm sure I felt the need fairly often. Isn't it just a physical necessity?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I recall the ground before it was vastly upgraded with the new facilties behind the goal housing the changing rooms which used to be in Portakabins adjacent to the clubhouse. I played at amateur level in the Croydon Wednesday & Sunday League and Semi-Pro for Chipstead FC (alongside Dominic Jordan), Met Police & Orpington FC. Nothing spectacular but I enjoyed being successful at that level rather than rubbish a bit higher up

Funny how this thread which was started to talk about football and spitting has meandered around to Crowborough. Just spitting distance from Tunbridge Wells where I used live.

Can't be avoided I'm afraid. Whilst the action itself is rank, as others have said it needs to be done as it just builds up. I will spit when I have a mouth fall of saliva during a long run. Spitting on a football pitch is very different from the chavs you see spitting in the street. Edited by Goal Machine (24 Feb 2021 3.10pm)

ok, so it is all about high performance of the airways. do olympic swimmers spit in the water ? indoor basketball, table tennis, 5 a side ? come to think of it, i do not recall much spitting on the Tour de France. If a fella can win a big competition , while not spitting, then the whole argument becomes a matter of opinion. what do the sports scientists say ?

Pep gaudiola is a big culprit constantly gobbing in the managers area wish he would stop.Tiger woods in golf was also a big culprit. I have seen ACDC live a few times and Angus young running around like a headless chicken for 2hours doesn't feel the need to gob after every song.
