The beer of my youth. Just pure nectar. Especially before they reduced the ABV back in the 80s or 90s.

The Dog and Bull, Railway Telegraph, Fountain Head, Plough, Dukes Head, Greyhound. All hallowed ground.

Now it's just meh. So frustrating.

Anyone else an ex addict?

Now that Sambrooks have moved into the Ram Brewery, which has the longest uninterrupted period of continuous brewing in the UK, I have discussed with Duncan he could do a retro brew. John Hatch has joined Sambrooks, previously the Youngs' brewer since 1986.

So, if anyone feels as strongly as me about a pint of Special get on to Duncan and twist his arm please.

Never been a great consumer of bitter but did get a liking for Youngs as I lived opposite the Fountain Head, when
My parents owned a shop

I'd prefer a pint of ordinary. The Pied Bull, The Gloucester or the HandinHand/Crooked Billet for me.

In fact I did the young '135' I think it was back in the day. That is visited every young tied house listed on that little leaflet and had it signed or stamped for a polypin and a tie. The fountain in Plumpton Sussex was the furthest out and was combined with a few losing bets on race day.

Try a Wandle next time you are over then. Tasty but not strong

Great Pub. Not a Fullers fan. it was the only pint the ex missus could smell on me.

other work pubs would be the East India Arms or Lamb Tavern in the city or the Guinea in Mayfair

Late 70s / early 80s with occasional visits after that.
No, not tried Mr. Harry but to be honest if London Pride is available I can’t get past it.
If you’re ever in Edinburgh try the Guildford Arms - very close to Waverley station. They have a good range and always have some interesting guest beers on too.

And if you are ever in Brecon it has to be The Royal Oak.

Will do.
I used to like Brains SA. The Pontefract Castle in Wigmore St., now closed, used to keep it.

I used to enjoys Youngs Special back in the late 80’s. Then they made it weaker and it was never quite the same.
I find London Pride ok, but Fullers do some excellent stronger beers. ESB, 1845, London Porter and Bengal Lancer are really good and if you like something really strong then I think their Imperial Stout is the best beer I’ve ever had. Closely followed by the Brewers Reserve no 5 and a honourable mention for the Imperial Porter and Golden Pride. They also bring out some old brews called Past Masters and most of them are excellent as well.
