Just seen on my local news that it has been the coldest January for 10 years. Not a climate change denier but wasn't it supposed to be getting a lot warmer.

Would that not be because the past years lockdown has decreased carbon emissions drastically and allowed the earth, and it's weather systems, to catch a break?

Yes, she was, poor love. Oh boy. Of course all of the scientists are wrong as usual. All I would say is that the QBO (Quasi-Biennial-Oscillation) remains in it's westerly phase but the easterly QBO is strengthening and starting to descend from the stratosphere. Winter 2020/21 is seeing a transition from the west to east QBO. Climate change can be a little complex for some people, so perhaps a few of you don't understand in any detail. A winter month as cold or colder than January 2021 used to occur in approximately seven out of ten winters through the 20th Century. In more recent decades this has dropped to around three in ten. A recent study by the Met Office reviewed the question of whether exceeding 40°C is now within the possibilities of the UK climate, after experiencing a record-breaking temperature of 38.7°C in July 2019. The results showed that under a high emissions scenario, where the world takes no action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, the UK could see 40°C days as frequently as every 3-4 years. It's amusing how often people on this site like to belittle younger people. I wonder why they do that.

The other side of man made climate change. The Great Dying of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas led to the abandonment of enough cleared land that the resulting terrestrial carbon uptake had a detectable impact on both atmospheric CO2 and global surface air temperatures. The ‘Great Dying’ was triggered by the arrival of Europeans and the introduction of new pathogens to the continent. Together, with warfare and slavery, there was an epidemic of diseases such as smallpox, measles, influenza and cholera. As the population plummeted, land was abandoned and farming ceased causing natural vegetation to grow back. Scientists believe that the changes to land use led to a lowering of CO2 levels sufficient enough that the concentration of the gas in the atmosphere eventually fell by 7-10ppm. This coincides with the ‘Little Ice Age’, a period between about 1300 and 1870 during which time many parts of the world dipped into cooler temperatures. In the 16th century global temperatures were at their lowest points. “There is a marked cooling around the 1500s/1600s which is called the ‘Little Ice Age’, and what's interesting is that we can see natural processes giving a little bit of cooling, but actually to get the full cooling you need to have this genocide-generated drop in CO2”, said Professor Mark Maslin (UCL Geography).

Interesting thanks. I have seen several pieces about an approx 500 year weather cycle. When you consider historical changes that we know of, many major ones seem to coincide with this. If caused by man or if natural, I couldn't say with any certaintity.
