is it ruining the spectacle of football ? the entertainment value of a game ? Does anybody else get infuriated when a team go a goal up, and commence tying their shoelaces, picking their nose, and having a demarcation dispute at every free kick ? And can we create a 'jose mourinho rule' .....whereby the injury-time is calculated by doubling every minute wasted by a leading team....to be appended after the normal 90 minutes has elapsed ? WITH THE PROVISO that if the leading team was doing all the time wasting and is still leading, then they pay double time....waste 3 minutes during the game and pay a price of 6 minutes after the 90. And so 'play the game with ambition' and you may win. Time-waste and you increase the probability of losing the game overall. or other ways to prevent time-wasting making the game get boring ? Have you noticed the staggering contrast between a Mourinho team before they score the first goal and after they scored ? A football topic, in Football talk. discuss

Free kicks can be a source of wasted time. Can someone tell me: is their a rule in the game stating that if a kick is awarded near the offending team's goal, it can't be taken until the referee whistles, which I guess can be up to a minute later, but if it's well away from goal, it can be taken immediately? I doubt it, but that's how it appears. I wish we would adopt the laws of rugby, where as soon as a penalty or free kick is awarded, the non-offending team can take it without any delay. If an opponent attempts to interfere - for example, by kicking the ball away - the kick will be moved forward 10 yards and the offender may be sin-binned. In addition, any opponent within 10 yards of the kick when it is taken may not take any part in the game until the ball or the player carrying it has gone 10 yards. Again, the punishment for not complying is that the kick will be moved forward.

We were desperately time wasting ourselves, particularly under Pulis. It used to wind up the opposition no end. It was one thing Wayne was really good at. He would place the ball down. Get ready with a 50 yard run up but then, go back and place the ball again, throw his arms around and walk really slowly to take the kick again. I didn't mind when we did it.

A couple of years ago I did a little experiment. Whilst watching a game on tv, I had a stop watch and stopped the clock every time the ball was dead. Only did the first half but there was only 22 minutes of football with the ball in play.

A few seasons ago there was a crackdown on dissent and stuff when free kicks were given , the ref could move the ball forward 10 yards , a law that seems to have just been forgotten about

In actual fact, in some instances, moving the ball forward 10 yards was not of benefit to the team awarded the free kick EG Moving the ball 10 yards forward at free kicks just outside the penalty area.

True, but to quote rugby again, the team awarded the kick are perfectly at liberty to take the ball back as far as they like from the spot where it was awarded. This happens when a kick is awarded out near the touchline and the penalty taker decides to go for goal and wants to improve his angle. Out of interest, is that allowed in football?
