January transfer window 2021

I think we need to keep all expectations low and should anticipate no movement during this window.

At time of writing, our squad is pretty much in full health, we have made a strong start to the season overall (except losing to Burnley and Newcastle which still angers me!) and there don’t appear to be any major weaknesses in the squad that are in desperate need of strengthening.

Rumours however have re-emerged if a move for Christian Kouame, a player whom Parish confirmed earlier this year we had a £10 million bid agreed for. Likewise, a last minute reported £25 million bid for Ismaila Sarr before the summer window closed suggested the type of player we are still after as well as there being money in the kitty.

A transfer window is always an exciting time however this year, I’m going to have to reign it in slightly I feel.

We should be looking at players whose contracts are expiring in the summer and are therefore likely to be sold now before being given away for nothing.

I have no idea who comes into this category but if there is a cheap young McArthur replacement we should be looking at him.

Conversely we should be spying on the Brentford recruitment team to see who they are looking at and snatch him up from under their noses

Tons of players out of contract at the end of the season, so the key thing for me is tying down those players we want to keep and finding replacements for those we are going to let go.

For that reason I expect one or two Ferguson-type incomings of young players that are somewhat unheralded, before the summer clear out.

Whilst i agree with the above sentiments, the employment criteria will change. UK players are unaffected, but, EU & non-EU players are. It will be like going back to pre Bosman. All this it would seem is dependant on how the 'Brexit' talks pan out.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

I believe the rules have been set out but I am not sure of the details so apologies. The market we should be looking at is the South American one, perhaps we are, who knows

The new rules

Hopefully this will mean more opportunities for homegrown players. As for EU players they will now be on a par with the rest of the world, no favours.

Townsend seems to have fallen out of favour and with his contract up next summer maybe we could possibly see him leave to WBA or somewhere and a replacement come in. I imagine Meyer will be keen to leave if he can too and that could free up space for a long-term replacement for McArthur. I wonder if Batshuayi might also ask to return to Chelsea if we don't start playing him as he'll want to be playing ahead of the Euros.

I feel like maybe we might see more movement out than in.

Where do you think someone can get in?

Squad has:

Guaita (Butland)

Clyne (Ward) Tomkins (Dann) Cahill (Sakho) PVA (Mitchell)

Kouyate (McCarthy) Milivojevic (Riedewald)

Ayew (Townsend) Zaha (McArthur) Eze (Schlupp)

Batshuayi (Benteke)

With Nathan Ferguson, Kelly, Meyer and Wickham very much down the pecking order.

Club already pays those salaries too. Unless Townsend leaves in the winter (unlikely) I don't really see somebody coming in.

PVA's contract is up in the summer so if he doesn't intend to sign a new contract it would be better to replace him in January whilst we can still get a fee for him

I think your spot on, the only possible buys would be youngsters like Banks last January for developement purposes.
You missed Kouyate from your squad?

We like a bargain so I can see us going for Lundstrum, Osayi-samuel and Gray all of whom seem to be running down their contracts. All of which I'd be happy with. As I think they'd be eventual replacements for Townsend (contract expiring), McCarthy/ MacArthur who one of which could be leaving/ aren't getting any younger.

I'd also like to see us invest in a youthful CB prospect as Sakho will be gone end of season, and the rest although solid are old and quite injury prone.
