Police (non) recording of crime

BBC link [Link] Inspectors said Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) service to victims of crime was a "serious cause of concern". HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) said about 220 crimes a day went unrecorded in the year up to June 2020. The force said it had "robust plans" to address issues. In the 12-month period reviewed by inspectors, it was estimated the force had recorded 77.7% of reported crimes, a drop of 11.3% from 2018." (BBC website) This is where politics influences police policy. Racial profiling, knife crimes, speeding motorists.etc. Whenever I've reported a crime (in SE London) I always ask for a Crime/Incident number to be generated. The police at the desk will always try and fob-off criminal damage as "one of those things" and "We can't do anything without evidence". Well, I want it reported anyway. It's all a big political numbers game.

Recently friends had their flat broken into in Deptford, just past the DLR up the hill towards Greenwich. Police near enough told them point blank that there was f**k all they could or would do about it. Horrendous crime to be a victim of, especially these days as they go after jewellery and sentimental items to then take to Crack Converters and the Police have sod all interest in solving or even investigating. I'm not entirely blaming the Police themselves, but it's a sorry state of affairs.

Actually rape and domestic violence are also under-reported, largely because of poor conviction rates and lack of evidence.

A few weeks ago a friend who lives in Bromley answered the door 2 men one with a gun the other with a knife pushed their way in threatened everybody and robbed the household. Luckily nobody was injured the police would not even enter the premises because of COVID let alone take forensics. He's not expecting the police to be kicking down doors anytime soon.

a couple times in my life i needed the help of the cops. to say i was disappointed in their performance would be a rather large understatement. Hypothetical question : if you ever needed help again, would you be better off slipping a few quid to Tony Soprano ?

if you need to report something minor, do it online, you will get a reference number of sorts, I do wonder if this was a conscious decision by GMP management to do this to reduce the numbers of reported crimes, but they got caught out by the inspection.
