I don't know if there's much interest in it here but I really enjoy watching some of football's minnows and Gibraltar have been growing a lot in the past few years. Got a few pros in their ranks now and look like they're gonna be in the same Nations League tier as Northern Ireland and RoI next year. So I'm gonna make a thread to post about it and if anyone else wants to chime in they're welcome too. The league there kicked off last week and in general the games were pretty tight aside from the league's biggest team Lincoln Red Imps beating the minnows College 1975 8-0. There were also a few strong showings from debutants including Kadrian Verjaque, a 17 year old winger for Lions who scored and assisted within minutes of coming on, and Dylan Borge, who scored a stoppage time brace to win the game for Europa FC just days after his 17th birthday. Today's games are Mons Calpe vs St Joseph's (kicked off at 3pm) and Lions Gibraltar vs Glacis United soon after. Mons Calpe started last week strongly with a 1-0 win over Glacis but fell apart almost immediately today, 3 down within 10 minutes and going in at HT 5-0 down and down to 10 men. Spanish striker Juanfri scored a brace for the Saints, meaning he currently has 47 goals in 46 league games since joining in 2018. Ideally there'd be streams for these games but the GFA is in deadlock with some teams over how much revenue they'll get from it, with certain sides demanding a bigger slice of the cake.

Mons Calpe got their act together and it stayed 5-0. Lions Gibraltar currently 3-0 up against Glacis United. Alberto Caravaca hat-trick, including a penalty won by young Verjaque. If he carries on like this I think Verjaque will get his first U21 call up in November for the games against Cyprus and Norway.

At risk of sounding 'Willoesque' didn't Palace play the Gibraltar National side around 20 years ago in the stadiums inaugural game?

I know they played Portsmouth about 10 years ago just before joining UEFA - it was how Liam Walker got signed cos Gibraltar won 3-0.

I lived in Gibraltar and played out there for a few years until about 2015. Honestly have never seen scenes like it when they officially got inducted into UEFA after years of Spain blocking it. Very odd state of affairs with every team out there playing on the same 4G pitch but pretty awesome playing football with a giant mountain at one end of the pitch and planes landing at the other.

Who did you play for? If you lived on the Rock for 2 years or more in that time you'd be eligible for the national team now. -- In terms of scores, Mons Calpe found their footing after 30 minutes and didn't concede again, keeping the score 5-0 to St Joseph's. Lions made light work of Glacis United too, winning 3-0 thanks to a Caravaca hat-trick (including a pen won by Verjaque). Europa Point are struggling against Europa FC right now though, 4-0 down at HT after 10 minutes where Europa just tore through at the end of the half. 18 year old Omar El Yettefti, who had a trial at West Ham at the start of the year (back in March so I'm not sure whether it got disrupted by the pandemic or not), has come on to help sure things up for EPFC. We finally had a draw last night as St Joseph's and Lions faced off. Finished 1-1 in the end, Lions levelling with a late late corner which was whipped in and headed in by none other than goalkeeper Borja Valadés, who'd come up to join the attack and managed to ghost in at the far post completely unmarked.

I don't profess to having detailed knowledge of club football in Gibraltar, but I have heard that SKY Co-Commentator Danny Higginbotham played international football for Gibraltar.

I believe the current stadium has been built on the site of a former barracks.

I believe the current stadium has been built on the site of a former barracks. Lathbury Barracks is used for sports but it's not a football stadium, all football is still played at Victoria Stadium. There has been talk of using Lathbury or the Europa Point Sports Complex while Victoria Stadium is redeveloped but they're trying to keep playing there while that happens, and a lot of the work has been delayed to due Covid. Today's fixtures were two big derbies, starting with the Gibraltar Classico between the top 2 of Lincoln Red Imps and Europa FC, that finished 2-2. Europa took the lead before a first half stoppage time leveller, before Lincoln took the lead and Marco Rosa levelled it at the death. The Ocean Village Derby took place shortly after, which was dominated by Bruno's Magpies last term but this year was a much tighter affair. Both sides ended the game with 10 men as midfielder Tyson Ruiz was sent off for Magpies, while Welsh keeper Jack Atkinson saw red towards the end and Magpies capitalised with a late winner.
