This is creating issues now. Companies are looking for younger employees to save money. Lots of mortgage payers and older people are being swerved so companies can employ younger and pay less.

My Mrs used to work at a WHSmiths. They only wanted to employ teenagers at the weekends because it was cheaper wages cost. Fairly often, one of the weekend staff would let them down (usually on a Sunday morning when hungover) and they'd have to quickly get my wife to cover the hours. They never wanted to pay her for those hours though, because she was more expensive than the kids, so they'd give her a day off in the middle of the following week instead the cheapskates.

My point exactly dorking. People with real commitments ( majority of youngsters have less) are being left on the shelf because of the minimum wage. This present situation could well have happened naturally with a cyclical recession. This is a little artificial but shows the failure in setting a minimum hourly rate. Many as I've said before could prove their value and get raises but now they are stuffed with this law. Equality doesnt always create the best outcome.

I very broadly agree with this. However, the problem, as usual, is that it was not thought through. There are hundreds of thousands of small businesses which should be excluded from the minimum wage/living wage rules (under a certain amount of employees perhaps, or profit margin), and restrictions put on the larger buisnesses/corporations to pay appropriate age groups at different rates and employ quotas of age groups. It could be achieved by using a percentage system.

Maybe they should scrap all working rights, and advertise jobs on a rising scale, so start at £1 an hour, if they don"t fill the vacancy put it up to £2 an hour, and so on, that way they will fill vacancies at around £5 per hour i would imagine, some cheaper, especially when people cant afford to eat, its a win win for businessmen everywhere and the unemployment figures would stay low!

Scrap unions and workers rights, sick pay could go for starters as if you"re not well enough to work you are in breach of contract! We need to re-educate the general public- holidays are a luxuary- so is a hot meal every day- we have become spoiled to be fair- back in the day a holiday was picking hops in kent for a long weekend-or apples- a working holiday! The zero hours contract idea is also an excellent idea- why should your boss pay you all day if he can just ring you at 5 in the morning and tell you theres an hour work for you at 8am, then pop back at 4 pm for a second hour, he dont need you inbetween so why let you take a whole 10 hours pay for 2 hours work? This economic downturn is going to bring in lots of working changes so we might as well get used to these practices, just live off the memories!

You had me with the first post Croydon, then it all went horribly wrong. The idea of rising wages until you find someone willing to take the job Is not as daft as it sounds.

It could well work, obviously not great for the working man but they seem to hate workers rights anyway so might as well bite the bullet and go back to the middle ages! I really do feel with zero hours contracts and the economic crash coming, anything is possible, never think "that" could never happen, it could, and probably will! I do feel for the youngsters starting out, if s*** really happens at least we can choose to drink ourselves to death, over a few years, but the young can"t afford to even do that!

This is why I agree with the op. Broadly. Like all rules, they get abused. For the benefit of some, but to the detriment of most.
