if there is anything to characterise the West , in the last 100 years, it must surely be this.

The US seems to be awash with people hooked on something or other. It could be a pharamceutical....legal or otherwise. Or it could be any of the following....

- food
- gambling
- shopping
- sex
- booze
- exercise
- other

Look at history documentaries or other sources. Sure, there were individuals with some addictions...especially booze. But surely not at the levels we are seeing today ?

what does it all mean ?

ranting at an anonymous public online is also an addictive behaviour. True. There is certainly an example of that on the other Palace fansite.

what proportion of the fellas in your local bookies are totally addicted and in there all the time ?

Most of these are just a way of avoiding responsibility. Dyslexia is a real thing but is often used as an excuse by people who can’t be bothered to learn how to spell.
From memory sex addiction was first claimed by Michael Douglas when his wife caught him boshing someone else - “Its not my fault. I have an addiction”. Yeah, right. An addiction to prodding as many good looking women as possible. What a nightmare to be in that unique situation.

I speak as an alcoholic, probably spare time on their hands is the glib answer?.

Alcoholism was a recognised problem as far back as the Georgian time look at Hogarth's paintings Gin Lane and Beer Street. I am reading a book about William Pitt The Younger he drank 3 bottles of port a day.

People did not have a decent life expectancy and died young with no proper diagnose and no central records. Society also didn't care it was the Victorians that changed that perception.

In short addition has always been their just hidden from view.

Sugar and Carbs are also very addictive.

Can you believe so many of our ancestors had little access to both ? especially sugar.

Yup there is plenty of evidence that food manufacturers knew this back in the 1950's and like tobacco kept quite about it.

Sugar intake increased post war with the rise in convenience food.

How about work ?
Ive known a few city types that are at their desk before 7am after a commute & still at work 8pm.
I used to find it hard to turn down work (painter) and do 7 days a week & evenings
Now ive sensibly kicked that into touch & couldnt hack it anyway, but a mate of mine (plasterer) used to do 7 days a week plus some evenings & once gave up counting when he'd clocked up over 100 days without 1 off !
Unfourtunatly dead at 50, although smoking done for him.
(possibly didnt help that he often had several girl friends on the go as well as being married)
Honestly think his addictions were , work, sex, booze & fags.

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

i knew a skinny fitness instructor. She must have done 18 hours of workouts per day. Everybody told her to reign it in.

Definitely, everything shifting online has made people inseparable from their phones to a worrying level!
